The crowd shouted his name, “Deon-Tay, Deon-Tay,” throughout the fight and he tried his hardest to deliver them a show. After a knock down of Molina in the fifth round (Wilder sent Molina to the canvas a total of four times), Wilder leaned over his opponent and screamed, “Welcome to Alabama.”

Boxing is about to get huge in Alabama.

And of course, Scarbinsky runs his delusional barner pretentious cock face mouth; talking about UA turning down Wilder at Coleman and throwing in cheap shots and making it a bigger issue than it really is.

Scarbinsky= glorified Clay Travis try-hard

No, he's absolutely correct. Whoever denied them access to Coleman is a colossal fricking moron and deserves to be fired.

Truth: Every person who owns business in Tuscaloosa should be angry with the administration right now.

It would have been even bigger here by default since Bartow is under 10,000 capacity and Coleman is a 15,000+ coliseum.

Not to mention, talk about every coach at UA, what an amazing recruiting weapon right on campus to bring prospects to.

Yes, I agree that it was a dumb move by Bonner. Just think he has always stretched stories out a little more than he should and always has a bit of animosity towards Bama.

I can't be the only one that sees it in the article am I?

And I would also say, because he's starting to become icon state wide, that he'll get plenty of opportunities to box in Tuscaloosa and across the state. He's making boxing become a pretty big deal in the state right now.

I never would have guessed people would get so up in arms about not letting him use Coleman.

Maybe, maybe not. Sounds like Birmingham made the most of the opportunity and impressed Deontay:
quote:

Should Wilder win and remain a boxing headliner, the BJCC will be in play for future fights.

"I'm looking at the BJCC because it's bigger than the MGM Grand (in Las Vegas) as far as numbers and attendance," Wilder said. "Birmingham may well be my home territory when Deontay's fighting at home, so we'll see how it goes."

Birmingham could be 'as big of a boxing site as anywhere else,' says Don King

Which is why when you have an opportunity like this, you've got to jump at it. No guarentee you'll get another one

Seriously, whoever the next president is, if it was me, one of the first things I do my first month would be reaching out to Wilder's people.

I hope he's not just aiming at the BJCC as a permanent fighting site, but I would hope he would wanna fight in other venues across the state, like say Mobile, Huntsville, Tuscaloosa, Montgomery, etc..Try and capture more fans.

This. If he truly wants to ignite the state he'll fight in venues all over just like you suggested.

Dude is 29 years old. His window to fights is half closed. He needs to pick venues carefully. Plus, Not trying to piss on the parade but I question the dudes chin. Saw him get shaken a couple times Saturday night by an out of shape Texan.

At 29 Vlad didn't know how to protect his shaky chin. He just needs to utilize his long jab more.

His chin is perfectly fine. It's superior to Wlad's, and that is not in question. What he lacks is technique. That backing up with the hand out stuff will not work against Povetkin, Wlad or Fury. Povetkin will slip it and hook. Vlad and Fury will just punch over it.

He's had all the physical tools to be great, but he's been grossly mismanaged and trained.

If only Emanuel Steward had not passed, he would have taken over Wilder's training and he would be a completely different fighter.

I went to the fight and I'm personally happy it was in Birmingham since it was only 10 minutes from where I lived. Bartow might also be a more fan-friendly venue than Coleman for that kind of scene.

The University needs to really get behind Wilder though. The guy is dying to give us publicity and he's an even bigger gump than anyone in this group. The guy loves him some Alabama. Its ridiculous that they ignored him but I think that story has been really overblown. The story should be about Wilder and having the first Championship fight in Alabama history. Its amazing how people like Scarbinsky want to harp on that. If Wilder was an Auburn guy and they turned it down, this wouldn't even be a story.

Auburn Arena is a glorified high school gym, they'd never have a major boxing event there.

I think you get my point though. AU rarely has to deal with this kind of BS. Alabama deals with it on a regular basis.

I disagree. Alabama or Auburn, it's a real head scratcher as to why the University felt it was necessary to ignore Wilder.
