Dabo Swinney on Alabama job: 'You never say never' | al.com
quote:

The dream scenario for many Alabama football fans is that when the time comes for Nick Saban to retire, Dabo Swinney moves right in to replace him.

It's a natural fit, given that the Clemson head coach grew up in Pelham and played at Alabama from 1989-1992, helping Gene Stallings' Crimson Tide win the national championship as a senior. He then began his coaching career under Stallings, working at his alma mater until he was fired along with Mike DuBose's entire staff following the 2000 season.

Speculation is that Alabama is the only job for which Swinney would leave Clemson, where he's 93-28, won a national championship last season and has unequivocal administrative and fan support. But would he really give up such a good thing, even for his alma mater?

Swinney was asked that question directly by ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit during an appearance on the Herbstreit and Fitzsimmons podcast Wednesday. And while Swinney didn't exactly say yes, he didn't exactly say no, either.

Here's his complete comment on the subject:

"First of all, anybody that would even say that or suggest that, I'm humbled by that and certainly appreciate that anybody would even think that way, that they would want me to be a candidate for a job like Alabama. But that's just kind of the fandom. People just naturally make connections and things like that and they never really consider all factors. I've always said 'you never say never,' because you have no idea what the dynamics are going to be. Ten years from now, Alabama may call me and want me to come to Alabama, and the Clemson people may hate me at that point. I don't know. I may have a terrible president or a terrible AD. There's dynamics that can change. I'm always just focused on being great where I'm at and blooming where I'm planted.

"All I know is, there's nothing we can't do at Clemson. I don't have to go somewhere else to win at the highest level, to recruit great players, to have great support -- I really don't. I'm just really fortunate. My focus is here and hopefully I can be here for a long, long time. If something changes down the road, you process those things then. But I love this place."

Saban is under contract through 2024, when he turn 73 years old. The 47-year-old Swinney this past summer signed a contract extension that also carries through the 2024 season, a deal that pays him upwards of $6 million per year.

You can hear the full interview  HERE. Swinney's comments on Alabama and his future at Clemson begin at about the 19:45 mark.

Call me crazy, but I still have doubts about wanting Dabo at Bama. A few years ago when people were talking about that possible succession I thought he was in over his head and would be chewed up and spit out at Bama. Did not want AT ALL. Now he has obviously enjoyed great success and has legitimately built a power program. Still I just don't know how his personality and act would play as Alabama HC. He's very different from Saban to me and maybe that would be a good thing rather than someone trying to copy Saban? I don't know.

You never say no to more money if all it takes is never saying never.

And Dabo should let them hire me to lose 6-8 games so he can come in to be the savior. I'd hold no grudge, and I'm sure I could lose that many even with our roster.

I know you know this, but if people are expecting a Saban clone to take over for Saban, they are going to be severely disappointed. Like Highlander, there can be only one, and even the ones that are similar out there don't really compare.

I would be very thankful if we landed Dabo, post-Saban.

I can't imagine who would be a better choice than Dabo. He isn't Saban.. and that is probably the best thing about him. If we go try to hire the next Saban, we will fail miserably.

Who do you want then? Dabo has won 10 games six straight seasons at what is just an okay program. Please don't say Jimbo Fisher.

I would welcome him with open arms. I'm a tarheels basketball fan and We tried to get Roy Williams years ago and failed which brought us several years off bad ball. Then he came after the second offer and it has brought success. If and when he's ready he may just show up

This was somewhat me a few years ago. I wasn't convinced he could be a consistent National title contender. I figured he'd average 9 or 10 wins a season, but never truly be dominant.

However, the last couple of seasons changed my mind entirely. He's the best possible follow up to Saban. The Dynasty would keep on going if he succeeded CNS.

I wasn't sure he was a great coach or not until I watched him go toe to toe with Bama in the national title 2 straight years. Now he's on the path to make it to a third straight national title game (possibly). I'd take him in a heartbeat. I would just have to mute the TV when he talks

The fall is going to be hard imo. No way to just keep the train rolling at the same speed. Gonna be a heck of a hangover at least when it comes to our expectations. Hope I am wrong but we will find out sooner rather than later.

Not if we hire Dabo. He's proven he can win with elite talent and replace elite talent via recruiting.

The roster will be loaded whenever Saban decides to retire.

All the new coach needs to do is keep the recruiting train rolling.

It already is.

Just wait until Saturday night when we beat Ole Miss by 40, yet Jalen doesn't throw for 300 yards with all passes being across the middle of the field.

Dabo is 93-28 as a head coach. Saban was 91-42-1 when he arrived at Alabama in 2007. Saban and Dabo are two very successful coaches with two very different coaching philosophies. He may not be a Saban clone but the man sure as hell knows how to win.

He should be the first coach we call when Saban retires.

Hopefully soon. I'm taking a little break from editing as I'm a little burned out with it. Plus there are a few things going on in my personal life that have grabbed my attention and kept me away from it.

Crazy would depend on how long you've been an Alabama fan. If you want to compare him to Saban or replacing Saban, then it's not crazy at all.

But if you want to look at the coaches out there we could reasonable grab, and look at the coaches we had before Saban, he's not bad at all - by a long shot.

If you need more proof of that, just look at what's happened with the rest of the SEC. Coaches who can get it done are far and few.
