How do you feel about the current roster, and incoming class? Enough pieces to make it to a regional in 2018?
Posted on 6/8/17 at 2:01 pm to CapstoneGrad06
Before we upgraded facilities, at our peak, we were in the regionals almost every year, made the supers most years, and went to Omaha about every 4-5 years. No reason we can't return to that level.

Alabama hasn't been to a Super Regional since 2010. Hasn't hosted a regional or super regional since 2006. And hasn't been to Omaha since 1999. That being said, yes Alabama did make regionals in most of Gaspard's seasons. That without upgraded facilities.
My question was more about the state of the team for 2018, with the major changes that have gutted the roster in the last 12-24 months.
I expect Alabama to have the pieces to compete deep into the post-season in the future. Maybe just not immediately under Bohannon.

Impossible to guess right now because the roster management is going to be such a mess. We only lost two scholarship seniors in Eicholtz & DeVinny. Connor Short graduated so he won't count against the 27 next year. But after those 3- we may only lose a couple players to the draft so we'll have very few open slots for incoming recruits.
And Goff signed like 24 or 25 kids (3-6 or so will sign pro) but still we won't have close to 17-19 open scholarship spots even if several kids quit/transfer/etc.
We have like 55 or so kids that will have to trimmed down to 35 with only 27 getting scholarships in the next two months.

*Sartain was offered a spot on the team as a preferred walk-on by Goff.
Heatherly and Thompson won't see campus for sure (pro). Praytor probably won't either unless he just really wants to. Holcomb may not, either. No real clue on the JUCO kids. Hard to predict anyway - all it takes is one organization to like a kid.
For example last year, Cal Jones wasn't on anyone's radar basically - wasn't even a Top 500 HS player in the country per the rankings never mind draft including college kids and the KC Royals grabbed him in the 6th Round.
But the roster is a mess and it's going to be ugly the next two months for some unfortunate kids that were expecting a scholarship from Alabama are going to have to find a home elsewhere. And one "problem" is our current players are so excited about the hire, most of them don't want to leave.

Fill me in on the staff positions. I know about Serrano already. Has he said yes yet? Who are the others?

Zulli is from Louisiana Tech. Will be hitting coach. Has been an assistant at Missouri and Memphis as well.

Can someone tell me the deal over scholarships? I think we can give 11.7 and other schools can give more? I may be wrong. How can you even have a roster with 11.7 scholarships to give? I may be way off on this.

Ga has the Hope scholarship for in state students. This is for tuition only and other states not named Al. and Miss have this also. It is based on your highschool GPA so not anyone who plays BB can get it if they don't have the HS Grades.

My god Goff was such a buffoon. I was actually thinking he'd be ok in time here, but I think I was way off.

Baseball has 11.7 scholarships to give to across 27 players. Any player receiving a partial scholarship has to receive at least 25% of a scholarship. Some players have full rides.
The deal in Alabama is that we do not waive out of state tuition for athletes like some states do. This means a kid from out of state playing baseball on a partial scholarship could still end up paying more out of pocket than an in state kid on no scholarship. Makes it really difficult to recruit out of state kids without either A) offering close to a full scholarship or B) taking a flyer on a kid not heavily recruited so Bama is one of his only options.
It really hurts with pitching. There is likely enough talent in this state to field 12-15 position players.

Heard Bohannon's interview with Gary Harris this morning. He sounds like a home run hire. Doesn't eat lunch cause he's working all the time.

I dont get it. Football can give all these scholarships and baseball can not even give 12 for their roster. Makes no sense.
