Alabama will be represented by at least one commitment at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl this winter, as Skyler DeLong has committed to play in the prestigious event in San Antonio, Texas.

DeLong, a native of Fort Mill (S.C.) Nation Ford, recently flipped his commitment from Tennessee to Alabama after receiving an offer at the Tide's specialist camp.

The 6-foot-4, 180-pounder is rated the No. 1 punter in the country, per industry-generated 247Sports Composite.

Last January, the Tide had one specialist commit in the annual game in Brandon Ruiz. The Gilbert (Ariz.) Williams Field product eventually flipped to Arizona State prior to Signing Day. Alabama didn't miss a beat, however, flipping another Army All-American kicker in Joseph Bulovas from Mississippi State.

No. 3 Kelvin Joseph, DB, 6-1, 190, Scotlandville, LSU commit

Joseph had a strong finish to the camp season following a slow start this spring. He excelled at cornerback, while showing flashes of being a great safety for his Scotlandville team.

No. 13 Slade Bolden, RB/WR, 5-11, 200, West Monroe

There are varying opinions on Bolden, but everyone agrees this kid can play. I just believe he is better than most give him credit for. Despite having minimal time to train for football in the offseason, he continues to show improvement in his game, and could be tremendous in an offense that wants to utilize his abilities as a runner and receiver.

Updated 2018 Louisiana Nifty 50 rankings Nos. 30-21

quote:

No. 26 Glenn Beal, TE, 6-4, 260 John Curtis

Beal remains entrenched in our rankings, and provides a lot of value to a team utilizing an in-line tight end at the next level. He is a good run blocker and has shown a soft set of hands. Conditioning and hard work would allow him to be a really valuable piece to a collegiate program.

Fresh off its Champions Cookout, Alabama will host another elite visitor on Monday.

Tyson Campbell, a five-star recruit from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., is visiting Tuscaloosa, like he planned to after The Opening. The 6-foot-2 Campbell is the nation's No. 20 overall recruit and No. 3 cornerback.

Patrick Surtain, the No. 1 cornerback, was in Tuscaloosa on Friday. Alabama is hoping to get Miami commit Josh Jobe, also an elite recruit, in town soon.

More from the weekend in Tuscaloosa

** Alabama landed just one commitment in Santa Ana, Calif., four-star offensive lineman Tommy Brown, but that doesn't diminish anything about the weekend. Many thought Salt Lake City four-star defensive end Cameron Latu would commit on his visit. Alabama still has a great shot. Maybe he was waiting to get home and produce a video or schedule an announcement.

Nobody believes in forgiveness like college football coaches. They routinely hand out second chances to talented individuals who've made mistakes/violated rules/committed crimes/broken commandments.

So who will be the first kind soul to lift up the fallen Hugh Freeze - Nick Saban or Gus Malzahn?

It would make sense for Saban to add Freeze to his army of analysts because no coach has given the Alabama coach more fits. Freeze beat Saban in 2014 and 2015 and took a serious run at a three-peat last season.

After Alabama shut out Ole Miss in 2013, the Rebels came back to hang 23 and 43 points to beat the Tide in 2014 and 2015 victories and 43 more points in last year's Alabama comeback victory.

Part of Saban's genius is his willingness to learn from past mistakes and defeats. While he's already hired former Ole Miss offensive coordinator Dan Werner as an analyst, Freeze was the boss of the Ole Miss operation, which was the biggest threat to Alabama within the conference the last three years.

Despite Freeze's personal and professional failings, Saban has the clout to forgive and forget.

Malzahn has a more personal reason to reach out to Freeze and help him in his hour of need. The two men are friends. It's interesting in hindsight to remember that their friendship was the basis of the last question asked of the Auburn coach during his SEC Media Days session in the big interview room.

The question: "Gus, I know you're pretty good friends with Hugh Freeze. He's obviously got a challenging situation where they can't play for a title or a bowl game. How do you think he's going to handle that?"

Malzahn's answer: "You know, I mean, Hugh is one of my good friends in this business. He's one of the good guys in college football. And you know, they're going to be extremely talented on offense, and their new defensive coordinator was our co-defensive coordinator last year, so I expect them to have a very good team."

Of course, that was before Houston Nutt forced Freeze to resign.

At the moment, Freeze doesn't look like one of the good guys in college football, but real friendship shouldn't be situational. One of Malzahn's primary tasks as the Auburn coach is trying to beat Alabama.

Who knows more about that subject - and happens to be out of work at the moment - than Freeze?

It's probably too soon for anyone to touch the radioactive Freeze until the NCAA Infractions Committee finishes laying waste to the Ole Miss program. Freeze could be subject to a show cause making him unemployable for a period of time.

There's also a chance Freeze made other personal mistakes that could become public knowledge.

But when the time comes, some college football coach will overlook his misdeeds and give Freeze a chance to begin his rehabilitation. There's no one better to hand him that second chance than Saban. Unless it's Malzahn.

Tyson Campbell, considered Alabama’s top cornerback target in the Class of 2018, will make his first visit to Tuscaloosa in two years on Monday.

The last time he visited, he wasn’t being recruited by the Crimson Tide. That has changed tenfold.

“I hear from Alabama almost daily,” Campbell said earlier this month when talking about his plans for a July visit. “I talk to Coach [Nick] Saban a lot, coach [Derrick] Ansley, I talk to them a lot.”

Getting Campbell, a 5-star prospect from American Heritage High School (Plantation, Fla.) on campus is important because Alabama needs several elite cornerbacks in this class. The Tide didn’t sign any in the 2017 class and the secondary will be thin in 2018. Anytime Alabama can host one of its top targets, you can bet that the program will gain momentum with that player.

The 6-foot-2, 180-pound prospect also said earlier this month that he’s planning on taking an official visit to Tuscaloosa this fall. Despite not visiting Alabama since he became a national recruit, Campbell has received face time with the coaching staff. Campbell attended a satellite camp at Florida International last month, where he spoke with Saban and defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt.

That visit definitely helped Alabama’s chances with Campbell, but he’s in no rush to make a decision.

“I’m just taking it day by day,” Campbell said of his recruitment. “It’s a fun process, but at the same time, it’s a tough one. You’re making a decision that can dictate your future. Your life can change in the next three or four years, so I am taking my time to make sure I’m making the right decision.”

Jaycee Horn still taking things slowly

Jaycee Horn, a 4-star cornerback from Alpharetta (Ga.) High School, took weekend trips to Alabama and Tennessee. Both schools, along with South Carolina, are finalists for one of the top corners in the country.

Horn, who is one of Alabama’s top cornerback targets, was originally expected to make his commitment earlier this month but now says that a decision will likely come near the start of his senior season this fall.

The son of former NFL Pro Bowl wide receiver Joe Horn has visited Tuscaloosa numerous times and actually is a passionate fan of the Crimson Tide. Because of the amount of visits he’s taken to Alabama, he didn’t learn anything new. Instead, he spent the majority of his time talking with current players.

“The best thing they really told me was that it’s just a family there,” Horn told SEC Country. “Also, you’re going to have to work each and every day. You’re going to compete against the best day in and day out.”

Coach Nick Saban and defensive backs coach Derrick Ansley reminded Horn of the opportunity he would have to play early if he did commit to Alabama. After this season, Tony Brown and Anthony Averett will have exhausted their eligibility and Minkah Fitzpatrick and Ronnie Harrison may declare early for the NFL draft.

That doesn’t mean that Alabama has an advantage over South Carolina or Tennessee, though, because he feels like he could make an immediate impact at any of those schools.

“Out of the three schools I’m looking at right now, I feel like I can start as a freshman at any of them,” Horn said. “So, now I’m looking at relationships and what coaches I feel more comfortable with.”

That’s where South Carolina has an edge over Alabama and Tennessee.

“The best relationship I have overall is with Coach T-Rob [defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson] at South Carolina,” Horn said. “I think the reason for that is we just click. He understands me really well.”

A source close to the Tennessee program told SEC Country on Sunday that the Volunteers believe Horn will wind up at Alabama if he has a committable offer. As of last check, he did. The Crimson Tide are targeting Horn, Tyson Campbell, Miami commit Josh Jobe, Patrick Surtain Jr. and Nadab Joseph, in addition to current commit Jalyn Armour-Davis. Surtain, the nation’s No. 1 CB, seems like a long shot for Alabama as everyone I’ve talked to about him says he’s as close as you can get to a lock for LSU.

On numerous occasions, Alabama and South Carolina have been Horn’s sole leader. Tennessee originally wasn’t one of the teams he was going to consider, but the Volunteers have been recruiting him as strong as they possibly can.

What can one of those teams do to separate themselves from the other?

“I mean, I really can’t tell you,” Horn said. “They are all in a good spot right now. I just want to make sure I’m 100 percent ready because I don’t want to commit, then de-commit. Right now, I feel like there’s not a wrong choice I can make. I don’t know what they could do to separate from one another.”

What to make of Jacob Copeland‘s accelerated timetable

There may not be a hotter team in recruiting right now than the Florida Gators. Florida has landed eight commitments in the past week and has risen 50 spots in the team recruiting rankings, according to 247Sports.

Florida doesn’t look like it’s going to lose momentum anytime soon, either.

Jacob Copeland, a 4-star wide receiver from Escambia High School (Pensacola, Fla.), was originally going to announce his commitment at the Under Armour All-America Game in January, but after a visit to Florida over the weekend, he has accelerated his timeline.

“I’m not going to wait that long,” Copeland told SEC Country. “I’m ready to make my decision.”

Usually, when a recruit advances his timeline to announce a commitment after a visit, good news is coming for that school. From talking with sources, it would be surprising if Copeland chose any other school but Florida when he announces his decision.

Copeland is a major Alabama slot wide receiver target, as evidenced by Saban personally escorting (not a Hugh Freeze joke) him into Bryant-Denny Stadium during A-Day after driving him there in his car.

I just don’t see him choosing the Crimson Tide when he makes his decision. Jaylen Waddle, a 4-star target who visited Tuscaloosa over the weekend, is a name to know at slot. That visit, according to sources, went very well.
