Full disclosure, BamaHammer was fricking him over not paying him what he was owed. He was running their Twitter and writing articles and they owed him back pay.

There was also a thing where he and someone else agreed to both quit, then finds out after he did that they pussed out.

This day and age, it was just kinda hard to retain consistency on a website when you can just hop on Twitter and get the info faster. The heavy lifting was done by single digits, and when that number dwindled, it put it on the shoulders of a single person.

We did it though, for however long it lasted. Nobody can take that away...

Welcome to SEC Country’s daily Roll Tide-ings, a rundown of everything happening in Alabama Crimson Tide recruiting with Chris Kirschner. Today, we discuss the latest with 5-star CB Patrick Surtain Jr. and Michigan St. commit Joseph Scates.

Surtain still considering Alabama

Alabama had wrapped up its seventh straight No. 1 recruiting class this past signing day, but Nick Saban wasn’t pleased with one area that day — the lack of a pure cover corner. The Crimson Tide signed zero corners in the Class of 2017 and that means corner is arguably the biggest priority for Alabama in 2018.

“We obviously try to identify needs that we have each year and I think in this class we sort of hit every spot but one,” Saban said on signing day. “We wanted to recruit at least one corner, maybe two. It just worked out that it didn’t happen that way for us.”

Enter Patrick Surtain Jr., the nation’s No. 1 cornerback in the Class of 2018 and the son of a two-time All-Pro CB.

Surtain, a 5-star prospect from American Heritage High School (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), told SEC Country’s Jeff Sentell that Alabama is one of the schools he’s strongly considering. You already know that Saban has drilled the message of the Tide’s lack of corners in this past recruiting class in his lead.

“You know coach Saban really talks to me about that,” Surtain said. “He says they have no depth after this year going forward at the cornerback position. To me, that really stands out how I could come in there and help that out.”

Alabama isn’t the favorite to land Surtain — and as it stands now — it would be surprising if he ended up committing to the Crimson Tide, which is somewhat crazy to say considering the success the team has had recruiting in the past decade.

LSU is the runaway favorite to land Surtain. Florida State is considered the team in the No. 2 spot. Although Surtain now lives in Florida, the majority of his family lives in Baton Rouge, La., and New Orleans. Surtain considers Louisiana home. It’s one of the main reasons why the Tigers have a stranglehold on the top spot in his recruitment.

His reason for picking a school also bodes well for LSU’s chances.

“I am looking for a school that treats me like a family,” Surtain said. “I am not scared of competition. I will bring the willpower to compete for a position when I get to college. I am also looking for a school that treats me like I’m home and a part of the family. I want to feel like I am at home.”

So, what about Alabama’s chances to knock LSU off the top spot?

“They are a great school. They are very high on my list,” Surtain said. “Coach Saban has been talking to me a lot and I already know Alabama is a great school. He doesn’t have to tell anyone about that. He doesn’t have to tell me that. I already know.”

He’s been to Tuscaloosa before, but he doesn’t know if he’ll take an official visit there just yet. He wants to visit again to figure out if he should examine Alabama in an official capacity.

Surtain is recovering from a torn hamstring, which will sideline him for the next six to eight weeks. He suffered it running the third leg of a 4 x 100 relay. He can run the 100 meters in 10.7 seconds, which is a blistering speed. When healthy, I’ve heard Surtain, who is rated as the nation’s No. 6 overall prospect, is the can’t-miss recruit in 2018.

Although the Crimson Tide have some ground to make up for Surtain, if there’s one school in the country that can quickly change the script of any recruit’s process, it’s Alabama.

Surtain wants to make a commitment either midway through his senior season or wait it out all the way until National Signing Day.

Alabama offer causes Michigan St. commit to rethink things

One of the most eyebrow-raising offers of the weekend from Alabama’s junior day event went out to Michigan State wide receiver commit Joseph Scates. Scates visited Tuscaloosa with his Dunbar High School (Dayton, Ohio) teammate, Tavion Thomas, who is a Crimson Tide running back target.

Since Scates was a child, Alabama has been the 4-star prospect’s dream school. Now that he has the chance to play for the Crimson Tide, his recruitment has taken a turn.

“Meeting Nick Saban was one of the best moments of my life,” Scates told SEC Country. “With Alabama being my favorite school since I was a baby, words can’t explain how happy I was to get the offer. It’s kind of an unreal feeling. I still can’t wrap my head around it. It’s kind of a dream come true.”

Thomas, who got his Alabama offer earlier this month, told SEC Country on Sunday that Scates was thrilled to get the offer. Both elite Ohio prospects left with Alabama on their minds.

“I saw his face when Alabama offered him, and he was so, so, so happy,” Thomas said. “He couldn’t even say a word. We ran out of his room yelling. We are really brothers. We really have to work for greatness now.”

As soon as Scates announced the offer on his Twitter account, Michigan State, the school he’s been committed to since January, reached out to him. The Spartans staff was aware that Alabama is Scates’ dream school.

The nation’s No. 24 wide receiver said the Michigan St. staff told him not to de-commit. He claims the school’s coaches haven’t really kept recruiting him since his commitment.

“I’m guessing since they got me where they wanted to be — committed — they probably felt as they already got me, so now let’s see who else we can recruit,” Scates said. “The ‘Bama offer kind of made me want to open up my recruitment because Alabama is definitely one of my top schools now.”

Don’t be surprised if Scates opens up his recruitment in the near future.

The recruiting trips to Jackson-Olin didn't stop with Auburn signee T.D. Moultry.

One grade below, Coynis Miller quickly became noticed with his frame and athleticism. Now at nearly 6-foot-4 and 290 pounds - with room to grow into "a good 300," the four-star defensive tackle has become a priority for colleges looking to strengthen their defensive line.

Miller has recently visited Auburn and LSU. Georgia and Clemson also just offered. He'll go to Alabama this weekend for a Junior Day, to Louisville on March 4 and he's setting up other visits. Mississippi State, Ole Miss and Florida are also recruiting him hard, he said.

While Moultry committed to Auburn last May, Miller will take longer.

"As of right now, I'm pretty wide open until I visit all the schools at least once," Miller said. "I'm going to start narrowing it down from there. I want to commit after the season because I want to take my official visits."

Miller transferred to Jackson-Olin from East Lawrence after his sophomore season. He grew up an Alabama fan, but won't let that shape his decision.

"It's more of a business decision," Miller said. "I don't want to go to a school just because I grew up a fan. I still have to fit their system. I don't let it affect me.

"I can see myself going out of state, but I'm going to have to fit with the team and the school."

Mario Cristobal was Miller's primary recruiter before leaving for Oregon. Since then, offensive line coach Brent Key has taken over.

"They're coming at me pretty hard," Miller said. "Coach Key took over the recruiting for my area. Me and him have a good relationship going on right now.

"I've always liked 'Bama. They play physical and have speed. They're all about business and I really like that about them."

Defensive line coach Rodney Garner is spearheading Miller's recruitment for Auburn. Miller said Garner told him he would recruit him hard, and he has.

"It's a nice school," Miller said. "They recruit me pretty hard. Me and the coaches have a good relationship and I feel like their team is going to be pretty good in the future."

Moultry wants his teammate to join him at Auburn, but isn't going over the line.

"He just tells me to follow where my heart is," Miller said.

Miller was an honorable mention all-state performer in Class 6A. He also played quarterback in short yardage situations and helped Jackson-Olin to the playoffs for the first time in 17 years.

He had 61 tackles and scored 12 touchdowns.

We merged, because at the time that was a bigger deal to be attached to them. Bring us to a new audience that they had amassed.

Problem was, BamaHammer didn't care about HZT. They barely did anything to promote us, they only cared when we wrote for them.

I got tired of posting stuff because it would always end up on another site verbatim. I'm not naive to think that wouldn't happen, but it just served those sites benefit at HZT's expense.

The latest Rivals100 for the class of 2018 has been released.

There are some major changes in our latest update, including five new five-star prospects, bringing our still-early total to 20. And while our No. 1 prospect remains the same with quarterback Trevor Lawrence, the top 10 saw some shifting.

Lawrence, a Clemson commitment from Cartersville, Ga., has a very good chance of going bell-to-bell as our No. 1 prospect, but the competition is heating up in what could be the most talented class since the 2014 group, at least at the top. Plantation (Fla.) American Heritage cornerback Patrick Surtain jumped up to No. 2 this time around, followed by Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy defensive end Xavier Thomas, Fairfield, Ohio, offensive tackle Jackson Carman and Harrisburg, Pa., defensive end Micah Parsons (Penn State commitment) to round out the top five.

Los Angeles (Calif.) Augustus Hawkins wide receiver Jalen Hall slid a couple spots to No. 6, followed by Laurinburg (N.C.) Scotland County running back Zamir White and Long Beach (Calif.) Poly quarterback (and USC commitment) Matt Corral, who check in at No. 7 and No. 8, respectively. New five-star offensive guard Jamaree Salyer from Atlanta (Ga.) Pace Academy is No. 9, and Jacksonville (Fla.) Trinity Christian safety Tyreke Johnson rounds out the top 10.

In addition to Salyer, new five-stars Lorenzo Lingard from Orange City (Fla.) University (Miami commitment), linebacker Palaie Gaoteote (USC commitment) from Las Vegas (Nev.) Bishop Gorman, wide receiver Justyn Ross from Phenix City (Ala.) Central and Houston (Texas) Lamar cornerback Anthony Cook debut as new five stars.

Our team of analysts breaks down each of the new five-stars here.

NEW FIVE-STAR PROSPECTS

quote:

OG Jamaree Salyer

Analyst's take: “Salyer has been in the five-star discussion since the initial rankings were released, and he finally got the bump after an excellent junior season and a dominating performance at the Future 50 event in Orlando. Salyer is a pure interior guy with impressive strength and technique beyond his years. With his impressive skillset it's not a surprise to see him earn five-star status. Georgia, Clemson, Alabama and others are battling to land his commitment.” – Woody Wommack, Rivals.com Southeast Recruiting Analyst

Farrell’s take: Salyer is special as an aggressive interior lineman and reminds me a bit of Andre Smith (Alabama) from years ago because he’s so physical and nasty. Guards often don’t get this much love from us, but he’s rare.

WR Justyn Ross

Analyst's take: “Ross put on a show at the Under Armour Future 50 and was the most impressive wideout at the event. He has solid size, but his sudden change of pace is what makes him devastating. Ross stretches the field with top-end speed but is also capable of turning short passes into large gains. Ross has a long list of offers and is thought to be the top target for both Alabama and Auburn.” - Cassidy

Farrell’s take: The best wide receiver from Alabama since Julio Jones? Could be. Ross is much more raw than Jones at the same stage and clearly not as strong or physical, but his ceiling is off the charts. A lot depends on how great he wants to be.

The latest Rivals100 release for the 2018 recruiting class is out, and the five-stars, as always, grab much of the attention. However, there were numerous players who made significant moves upward either into the Rivals100 or within the list itself.

While there were many discussions regarding players that just missed a fifth star this time around, Moore (Okla.) Southmoore offensive tackle Brey Walker (Oklahoma commitment) and wide receiver Terrace Marshall Jr. both entered the discussion and might just use big spring performances to get that boost.

There were plenty of big movers. The biggest are listed below and broken down by the Rivals.com recruiting analysts.
