5-star Devon Hunter talks recruiting
Michael Clark
Regional Recruiting Analyst

Last week, Devon Hunter was named the top 2017 prospect in the East Region. Following the announcement, Scout caught up with the five-star Virginia athlete, who spoke about the latest developments in his recruitment.

"I'm still taking my time with the recruiting process and just enjoying it," Devon Hunter said.

His most recent trip was to an SEC school.
”My last visit was to Alabama," said the 6-foot-2, 206-pound Hunter. “It’s was my second time there and I had a great time. I felt very comfortable down and everyone really welcomed me. My teammate Jaquan Yulee, who just committed there, was with me and he’s trying to get me to come play with him.

”I really enjoyed being around the coaches, seeing the facilities again and just meeting all the different players. It was great building a bond with them and the trip was just a lot fun.”
While on campus, Hunter had a chance to sit down and speak with head coach Nick Saban.

”It was great talking with him,” Hunter said. "He told me I’d have a chance to come in and make an immediate impact because by the time I get there, a lot of their safeties would be leaving."

Along with Alabama, Hunter’s lengthy scholarship list, which is approaching 30, includes Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, NC State, North Carolina, Penn State, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Wisconsin among others.

One of the nation's top uncommitted prospects shows up in #Bama gear at #TheOpening

I'm guessing he's referring to Ben Davis. I don't subscribe to Scout, so I have no idea.

4-star OG Simpson updates recruitment
Michael Clark
Regional Recruiting Analyst

John Simpson is one of the top offensive linemen in the South. The South Carolina offensive guard spoke with Scout about the latest developments in his recruitment.

”Right now, I’m still taking my time with process,” said the 6-foot-4, 288-pound Simpson. “But South Carolina, Clemson, Georgia, Tennessee, LSU, Alabama and Florida are standing out.”
He gave a quick thought on each school.

Alabama: “They’re always winning and I like to win,” said the 6-foot-4, 288-pound Simpson. “I also really like the coaching staff – (outside linebackers) coach (Tosh) Lupoi and (offensive line) coach (Mario) Cristobal."

Clemson: “There’s a family atmosphere up there and I just like how they treat me when I go up there to visit.”

Florida: “I like (offensive line) coach (Mike) Summers and how he’s always honest with you. I also like (defensive line) coach (Chris) Rumph. The whole coaching staff is cool.”

Georgia: “I like the coaching staff there. Coach (Rob) Sale is a good offensive line coach and (inside linebackers) coach (Mike) Ekeler is a good recruiting coach.”

LSU: “I haven’t had a chance to visit them yet, but I know they have a good tradition there. I also have a good relationship with (offensive line) coach (Jeff) Grimes – we’re real close.”

South Carolina: “It’s close to home and they treat me well every time I go up there. (Offensive line) coach (Shawn) Elliot is always honest with me and we have a close relationship, too.”

Tennessee: “I haven’t been visited them yet either, but I really want to get up there. I like their football staff and the tradition.”

Analysis: Junior Evaluation: Raw, but has some tools you look for in a FBS offensive lineman prospect. Likely a guard, but solid length, good feet, and a natural bender. Needs a lot of developing physically and technically, but can get to the second level, can get in and out of his stance, and can move in space. One to watch as he grows and improves his technique.

His most recent was to Clemson last month.

”I had a good time,” Simpson said. “Coach (Dabo) Swinney and I got to talk one-on-one and he told me how much they wanted me and we also talked a lot about their offensive line. He didn’t pressure me, but he told me he thought Clemson was good place for me. They’re definitely recruiting me the hardest.

”While I was there, they had a camp, and I was really impressed with how the coaches and players were interacting with the kids.”
What’s next for Simpson?

”I really want to go back to South Carolina and also visit LSU and Tennessee,” he said. “I also might go to Dawg Night at Georgia. On the visits, I’m looking forward to developing good relationships with coaches and I want to see if there is a family environment.”

Simpson plans to narrow his list of schools down in the near future and hopes to take all five official visits. He doesn't have timeframe for his decision at this time.

Tough pull from UNC, but at least we are getting him on campus

UF is the team to be right now. Rumph is doing a great job with him. It also tells me we must not feel as good as some think on Gary. The word is he always had interest in UA but UA had not been pushing hard and the feeling was because of Gary and R Lawrence being higher.

The Opening: Trevon Diggs
Brian Dohn
National Recruiting Analyst
BEAVERTON, Ore. -- Trevon Diggs delayed his July 4 announcement and now has five schools on his list.

Gaithersburg (Md.) Avalon four-star receiver Trevon Diggs was going to announce his college choice July 4 at a family barbecue, but opted to pull back so he could look at other schools.

Alabama and Maryland stayed on his list, but he added LSU, Clemson and West Virginia to the fray.

After arriving at The Opening, Diggs spent some time with Scout to give the lowdown on his recruitment.

ETA: Said he could play DB in college. He will let the college make the determination.

Isaac Nauta (pictured) is still "strong" to Florida State, but he did recently visit Georgia and he now plans to return there for an official visit. At this time, the Scout 100 tight end out of Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy is planning to take official visits to Alabama, Florida State, Georgia, and USC.

When The Opening ends Friday, Scout 300 cornerback Nigel Knott is not going home to relax in Mississippi - he is heading back to Tuscaloosa (Ala.) to visit UA for the second time in six weeks. Alabama is viewed as one of the favorites for the four-star prospect. Florida State, Oregon, and USC among others are under consideration as well. No decision is likely until after he takes his official visits this fall.
