Posted on fark board as well but had such good success in here last time too I thought I'd let Bama board have a crack at it also.

Can someone do a decent rendition of this picture of Han & Chewie with Big Al's head replacing either Chewie or Han's?

What program do you use?

How do you get your cutouts clean? I still struggle with my edges from time to time in photoshop...

I know you were asking him but assuming you're using photoshop, the move is to use the smart selection tool to get it close. Then you go to the selection menu and select what up until photoshop cs6 was known as "refine edge" tool, but in the current iteration of photoshop cc, it has become the "select and mask" tool.

This is where you refine your edges. You can feather, expand and contract, adjust smoothness, contrast, etc.

It used to be a whole lot more complicated before about cs4 or so.

I appreciate it

Upgraded from a free online program to CS6 in the past year and I've just been learning on the fly so far. A LOT more to take in than in a site like Pixlr

I'm not trying to tell you the obvious, but there is a ridiculous amount of photoshop tutorials on YouTube. I realize it has so many features that it can be intimidating to even figure out what to search when you're getting started but it is by far the best way to learn.

Just google as you go. Somebody has asked basically every question before. It's how I learned and most ppl for that matter.

My brother actually told me the same thing this past weekend, pretty much how he learned. Sometimes it takes a few times to drill a good idea home with me

I might have a shot in a few months with it as work through him, so I figure to streamline how I do things(instead of slow and stubborn).

It really is the best advice to learn when you're getting started.

Hell, design and photoshop is a little more intuitive but programming is the same way. Half of the job is googling shite, even when you're pretty good at it. You may know how to code but you'll still have to read each API's docs, still have to stay up to date on constantly changing libraries, still have to run down each problem's unique solution, etc. it's just how it works.

In this kind of thing, accepting that and staying patient and then learning to be smart with your googling is more than half battle, even if it's just for fun. If you keep that in mind, you'll start figuring things out left and right before you know it.

Honestly, I use a bit of GIMP and a bit of the preview app on macbooks.

Preview has a smart lasso that can get you pretty close. Then I clean up in GIMP, where I zoom down and cut/erase edges.

In this particular case, I did it really quick. Honestly, I'm just learning myself.

ETA: I've never used PS but I should. :\ GIMP sucks. IMO.

memphisplaya started me out with with GIMP a few years back because he was tired of me asking him to do shite

Then he eventually passed on a copy of photoshop to me, which I immediately lost. Don't really know how I got to Pixlr, but I got tired of going to different programs for certain things. I got this copy of photoshop from my ex(which is probably the only good thing she did for me this year).

I think both GIMP and Pixlr do skim a lot of features from Photoshop, so the bare basics were easy enough.

Of what I've seen from you, good stuff

That is correct. I've never used Pixlr but I know in the case of gimp it was literally conceived as a free alternative to photoshop so it bites a whole lot of basic features and UI from them. It's a really good program for casual users who dont wanna pay from (or risk stealing) photoshop. You can see this guy's edges are entirely competent on this fark he made with Gimp. Basic stuff like that is fine in Gimp.

But photoshop is still the standard for this kind of thing. (Though I've actually started using sketch more for UI design but only because of the vector friendly canvases, icon libraries, shortcuts, etc. Photoshop is still goat for farking.) Also once you learn your way around in photoshop, I much prefer it to gimp in a lot of basic and shortcut related ways but that's more of a familiarity thing. Gimp is great because it's free. Photoshop costs money.

The refine edge tool in photoshop I was talking about would eliminate the need for you to ever do this btw, and the smart selection tool in photoshop is incredibly nuanced when compared to its counterpart in gimp as well. I honestly will probably never be able to wrap my head around how well they programmed that component of the program. You can really get precise with the thing.

Then you get into the content aware fills this baby can do, which can also come in handy when you're farking, editing out tv logos, unneeded objects, things in the way, etc. it's just an unbelievable piece of software these days. i've been using it since photoshop 3.0 and you guys don't even know how good you have it with a program like gimp. We used to have to steal all these 3rd party plugins and hope the crack worked just to get a lot of the basic features that are now built into the program. These days the shite is insanely sick.

TRUTH... between this and the aforementioned google tips, mofos dont even understand how horrific graphic design on a budget used to be just say 5 to 7 years ago, let alone back in the early 2000s.

When you mentioned photoshop plugins, man you really took me back. The Creative Suite was a god-send. I havent really jumped into the newer subscription based offerings though. CS6 has been damn good to me...

I guess I can't really complain about GIMP since it is a free software. The latest version I downloaded this week is much better than the previous. However, some of it still has issues.
