McElwain has some masterful games, that NC game against LSU being his best work. He was very bland though, I still remember those drives that consisted of dives, a WR screen, a slant, and a punt.

I still say his biggest mark on his tenure is "wasting" Julio Jones. You have one of the most physically gifted football players to ever walk through the university and you didn't take full advantage. Julio did a lot, but he could have shattered records in just a slightly more developed passing game.

This! Replace Amari Cooper with Julio Jones and think of the production. Granted, their skill sets are a little different, but I think even Nuss in his ignorance would recognize what he had in Julio. He did with Coop. Makes me drool just thinking about the offense. Or even in Kiffin's screen heavy system. Man, oh man.

Make no mistake, Kiffin is the best OC this university has ever had. If you put your personal feelings aside and look at stats and results.

Jmac was good but every single year he was here, his qbs would go through a mid-season stretch where they couldn't hit water if they fell out of a boat.

I will never understand the love for McElwain.

I think McElwain did more to loosen Saban up a little bit with his offensive philosophy. He easily had the best relationship with Saban than any other OC has had with him while here. But he came at a time when the SEC, and the overall NCAA, was in a bit of a flux moving from ball control, pro-set offenses, to the spread. Mac subtly implemented some spread philosophies into the offense, while also maintaining the ball control, power offenses Saban wanted.

The 2009 SEC Championship Game is still the best offensive game plan and play calling of the Saban era. It was masterful. And he used a LOT of spread formations with the TE split out wide in that game.

Nuss is a good OC. He was just a bad fit with Saban. Everyone knew he was on borrowed time after Saban's halftime interview in the 2012 SEC Championship Game.

Kiffin was the best of the Saban era though. The numbers and results don't lie. Homer Smith was the best in my lifetime.
