Do y'all think that heart-wrenching losses like that every so often help keep the players/coaches motivated? Games like last year, the Kick 6, Ohio St., the Cam Back. They seem to energize the team the following year. Maybe I'm looking for a silver lining.

I will take a kick in the nuts like that every so often if it helps prolong the dynasty

If we've got to lose one, I'd rather it be to a coach auditioning to replace Saban than Urban fricking Liar

If so, I feel bad for Ms Terry.

I don't think so. A great coach doesn't need that to motivate the players. And Bama actually looks lethargic and uninspired after their losses pretty often, like 07 Florida State, Mississippi State, ULM, Auburn, 08 Utah, 10 Ole Miss, 11 Mississippi State, 13 Oklahoma, 14 Arkansas.

It's so weird how one play.... one defensive stop would change an ENTIRE year and outlook on the next season.

Heck, think about it. 2016.... undefeated, where would you place such a squad amongst the other Nick Saban teams, heck Alabama teams, certainly nowhere near the bottom, or even middle. I would argue it would have been #3 at LEAST with a great argument for #1.

Not necessarily talking about immediately after a loss. I'm talking about providing fuel to the fire during the off-season. Listen, I would like for Alabama to win every game but I believe that occasionally a loss can get the player's attention.

Not sure but I will say I think it eats at coach every day and a pissed off Saban is good for us and bad for the rest of the SEC and the country.

I'd imagine it helps with fighting off complacency to some degree.

More than 3 points from the 2 turnovers the defense forced on Clemson's side of the field, or 3 offensive series more than 5 plays could have done the same trick.

A few first downs here or there and we win. Clemson earned it and there's no shame in losing to them.

Move on.

Outside the 2007 shitshow, in all the other examples we went from #1 NCG contender to not. Hard to sustain the same level of motivation with that reality staring you down. Still, we won several of those games.

Honestly with the way Clemson was playing that night the loss didn't really affect me much. I was pretty pissed that night but by morning I was surprisingly over it.

I almost forgot about the game until you brought it up.

Sadly this is true. Fans definitely get "winning sickness" as Saban calls it, and so do players and coaches.

It's symptoms are entitlement, laziness, lack of passion and enthusiasm.

There is sadly no known cure for it other than the occasionally loss, which serves as a gut punch wake up call that you aren't entitled to win every time you step on the field and that you must work hard and earn it.

It also wakes up the fans so they appreciate the wins and the good times more than they do.

The fans definitely had this last year but not the players. That team was all in because of leaders like Jonathan Allen and Eddie Jackson. The fact that defense held out as long as they did against Clemson was incredible. I don't think that loss had anything to do with player effort.

In 2013 the players did have an entitlement problem, and Saban said as much.
