Give me the line up for the best players in Alabama history....

who did not play under either Bear Bryant or Nick Saban. (or spent significant time outside of those eras).

QB

I nominate either Bart Starr, Harry Gilmer, Jay Barker, Gary Hollingsworth, or Mike Shula...

but yeah it's easily Starr.

Fun Fact about Alabama If you removed the Bear Bryant and Nick Saban eras.... you're still left with a bevy of great players, coaches, amazing history and SIX national championships. Alabama is still a top 10 all-time program.

QB: Harry Gilmer (Starr didn't do much at Bama)
RB: Alexander
WR:Hutson, David Palmer
DL:Curry and Copeland
LB: Bennett, Derrick Thomas, Demeco Ryans
DB: Langham, George Teague, Harper
Not a complete team but who I can think of so far

If you're talking about the best players of their era, you'll have to go back to 1915 (Bully Van de Graaff) to start looking.

WR - Don Hutson, Davide Palmer, Tyrone Prothro, DJ Hall, Freddie Milons..... and Paul Bryant himself.

FUN FACT: The first Heisman was awarded in 1935. Don Hutson's senior year, capped with a national title for undefeated Alabama, was 1934. Don Hutson's Tide would face the Stanford and the other best player that year, Bobby Grayson. Bama won 29-13. Had the award started one year earlier, there are excellent odds that the Tide would have the honor of the first ever Heisman, instead of going without one until 2009.

Hutson is the greatest player all-time, period. His stats are mindboggling.

I'd add Andre Smith too, a prized Mike Shula recruit and one of the best talent lured to the capstone during the era of the Mikes. He started immediately and succeed in keeping John Parker Wilson from being flattened like Brodie.

OL nominees

Andre Smith
Evan Mathis
Wesley Britt
Rod Rutledge
Chris Samuels
Larry Rose
Emanuel King
Vaughn Mancha
Don Whitmire
Joe Domnanovich
Fred Sington

In all honesty, Coach Bryant wasn't that great a player. He played opposite of Hutson and was known as "the other end". He's probably most famous as a player for playing against Tennessee...with a broken leg..pretty tough fella!

If you think that's tough, Bully Van de Graaff once got the better part of his ear torn off during a game ...came to the sideline for a bandage and went right back in! They don't make 'em like that anymore.

Watching replays of Shaun Alexander tearing defenses apart and thinking.....

how ludicrous would he have been if he had a Nick Saban era line to run behind for 4 years. Heisman easy, he'd set records that would remain unbroken for years.
