Champions Challenge began last night as well as some fall jamborees. AISA had 2 preseason games last weekend.

My thoughts thus far:

1. Hillcrest looks talented...led Demopolis 42-0 at halftime.
2. Demopolis usually plays good football however it appears graduation hit them particularly hard.
3. Edgewood Academy's nation long win streak will come to a crashing halt this season. Autauga Academy has apparently benefitted from Edgewood's loss of players.

Looking forward to watching Hoover vs Central Phoenix City tonight.

For anyone interested that cant get the game on their TV:

go to AHSAA website and you can stream the game via several options found on the right hand side of the page.

They benefited from more than the players.

The guy (Bobby Carr) that was Edgewood's head coach during their run is now the OC at Autauga Academy.

Yeah. However I have never been impressed with him to be honest. I have seen him do many stupid things offensively that either worked or at least did not backfire due to the talent discrepancy.

I actually hope he comes over to AHSAA and attempts to do some of those things.

ETA: Obviously he is a decent coach/ good coach. I just do not think he is a great coach or a difference maker from an X's & O's or strategy standpoint.
He has been great at getting more talent on his team than his opponents have.

I watched the Edgewood vs Marengo State championship game online. Marengo pounded Edgewood and if MA could have passed at all or had 2 more minutes they would have ended the streak last year. A 90+ yard drive to end the game without scoring..Edgewood could not stop them.

Have my first game tonight at Alma Bryant vs Faith Academy. Posting from the locker room because the rant is much more important to me. Probably gonna lose every game this year but we're a close knit group down at the bottom of 7A.

Wow, hard to believe that a coach that has won like 4 straight state championships leave to be a OC at another high school.

What happened with Edgewood? I know they moved up to 3A, was he scared of the upgraded competition?

Just saw were Edgewood was losing to Morgan 14-0.

Eh, not much of a difference in the Aisa levels, since the big boys play in AHSAA

Yes, moved up to 3A.

During the summer the Coach came into conflict with admins/board. Why? Both side have their own version I guess. Carr announced his resignation in order to pursue other things?

Became a mess with players withdrawing etc. and Carr taking the OC job at Autauga.

Yes, was very surprising. However, the talent cycle gets every high school unless you are recruiting I guess.

Maybe its Demopolis turn to have a few bad years.

Having coached in both AHSAA and AISA I have to disagree with you here. Can be big differences in classifications, maybe not as much between 1A and 2A, however 3A can have a good deal more talent.

There are plenty of players in AISA that can play AHSAA at all levels. Biggest difference tends to be overall team speed. AHSAA doe have more overall talent, no question. However, AISA teams compete just as hard and work just as hard. I still enjoy watching both leagues.

They had some type of internal melt over the summer. He says he was forced out/resigned because some at the school were displeased with the racial makeup of the team. No idea if that is true or not, but it was like a church split. When he left, a lot of parents pulled their kids.

It all happened at a time when there weren't a whole lot of jobs open. Autaugaville is just a quick commute down Hwy 14 from Elmore, so I suspect it is a temporary marriage of convenience where both parties know it isn't going to last past this year Unless there is a non-sports reason he wants to stay in the area, he will probably have a job more befitting his record this time next year.

ehh, I admittedly don't know how it is today, but back in the 90's and early 2000's there was a big difference. Morgan was a powerhouse in those days, won 3 straight 3A titles at one point, won another one in '06, and then started sucking terribly. Surprised to hear they're leading edgewood, they must have lost more than a few players.

Anyway, the bigger schools in 3A in those years would've crushed the smaller schools- Morgan, Mobile Christian, Faith, Bessemer. Back in the late 90's Bessemer fielded a team with like 18 kids and when the 2000's came around they were a powerhouse (one of the first AISA schools to start recruiting black kids)

There used to be some talented ball teams in AISA that would've held their own in public school ball. Morgan had a few kids go on to play at Auburn from that era, we had a lineman at bama that played at Sparta Academy. I grew up in AISA ball at two different schools and played a year at a 5A public school system before I moved to Florida...at least when we were young I can attest that there were a lot of kids I played private school ball with that would've started in AHSAA. I played with Zac Etheridge in Troy (started at safety for auburn) and there were 2 or 3 kids at the private school in Troy that were better ball players early on in high school. A few of those kids played at Troy at the collegiate level. Top-to-bottom the talent isn't equal in most cases, but you also have to realize that the biggest AISA schools would be 2A or 3A in AHSAA, and the cream of the crop can definitely hang at that level.

Faith went from 3A in AISA to 5A in AHSAA. Faith sucked in AISA in the late 90s then Robbie James got there and turned them into a powerhouse.

Yep. James coached my brother at Morgan, he racked up all those titles there- went to faith- morgan fell off the map- and then Gartman came back from Wilcox and lead them to a title over Bessemer in '06. Robbie James gave me my first paddling at school

Faith was a new school back when they were in AISA, they grew exponentially.

Jamboree or season started? Either way that's an arse kicking and I don't think Morgan has a great team

Regular season game.

Lots of folks gonna take out some frustration on Edgewood this year.

I was thinking these were the fall jamboree games with the regular season starting next week. I could be wrong.

ETA: Seems like this was changed last year. Schools could play a regular season game this week or play a fall jamboree game...their choice. (Anyone know if this is correct or wrong?)

ETA#2: Just read this on al.com

"Yeah, you knew the first football Friday wasn't going to be easy -- even with 60 percent of Alabama's football teams opting to play games that count instead of jamborees."

Yes Edgewood is going to lose quite a few...heard they were very short on total number of players even.

I am more involved with public school now but I still think AISA does not get the credit they deserve from the average Alabamian. Some good talent there.

FWIW, I think Edgewood, who has been 2A the previous few seasons had talent comparable to a very good 4A or competitive 5A AHSAA team would have. Not saying they would have won or even played in the state championship in those divisions, but I think they could have been competitive in the very least.

FWIW, the new Edgewood Head Coach was one of Morgan's assts. Don't know the name but heard he had played at Edgewood.

Also, Watched some AISA baseball this past year. Morgan had an 8th grader with a very very quick bat. Had tremendous power. Don't know the name however.
