RUNNING BACKS

Leaving: Derrick Gore aiming to transfer.

Underclassmen leaving for NFL: Nobody.

Returning: Bo Scarbrough, Damien Harris, Josh Jacobs, B.J. Emmons, Ronnie Clark.

New guys: Najee Harris (EE), Brian Robinson (4-star).

Outlook: A once barren position is looking pretty solid for 2017. Everyone but Gore is back but how healthy are they? Scarbrough [minor tibia fracture in NCG], Emmons, and Clark have battled injuries. Barring a grad-transfer, none of the returning Bama running backs are seniors. Najee Harris is a big boost to this unit.

KICKER

Leaving: Adam Griffith.

Underclassmen leaving for NFL: Nobody.

Returning: Andy Pappanastos.

New guys: Brandon Ruiz (3-star).

Outlook: You're gonna miss him when he's gone. Some fans gave Griffith a hard time over his career at the Capstone, but in the end, he was rock solid. Rising senior Pappanastos was 6-of-6 on PAT attempts with a 33 yard field goal in one attempt this season. He also kicked off twice for 58 and 56 yards. (Long snapper was covered yesterday)

COACHES

Steve Sarkisian's one game career as OC at Alabama did not turn out as Tide fans had hoped, but there is promise.

Ten year assistant Burton Burns (RB/ST) isn't likely going anywhere anytime soon.

Mario Cristobal (OT/TE) has done a masterful job as the recruiting coordinator for Nick Saban. It would take a significant job offer for him to leave.

It was the first season for Brent Key (Guards and Centers) at the Capstone. Right guard was a deficiency this year and Pierschbacher seemed out of place at left guard. Will Key be blamed?

Billy Napier (WR) just finished season number four. He is a good recruiter.

Any thoughts on Moses at Safety rather than LB? He has the measurable a to be an insane safety or hybrid player and could probably find himself on the field next year.

He just now as a Senior proved his merit to scouts in coverage as a LB, don't think that equals having potential at safety...

Ahh I see. I was just looking at his physical measurable and he's built a bit different from some of our previous LBs.

As good as LBs and WRs have been I would love to see another Rolando or Julio :) I don't think there will be another Julio though.

Physically, probably not but in terms of ability at the receiver positions Amari was just as good.

Alabama secondary is in good shape even after losing Marlon Humphrey
AL.com | Jan 17, 2017
quote:

Not long before Cam Robinson, Marlon Humphrey and ArDarius Stewart announced that they're turning pro last Friday, cornerback Anthony Averett informed Alabama coaches of his decision to bypass the NFL draft and return for his senior season with the Tide.

Averett staying in school is a big deal.

Losing him would have left the Tide needing to replace both of its starting cornerbacks -- Humphrey and Averett. Instead, Alabama appears to be in very good shape secondary-wise heading into next season, even after losing Humphrey.

Averett, who NFL draft analysts believe could have been as high as a second-round draft pick had he turned pro, will be back. So will safety Ronnie Harrison, cornerback Tony Brown, safety/dime back Hootie Jones and All-American Minkah Fitzpatrick, who has proven capable of excelling at cornerback, nickel back and safety.

Two of the biggest questions secondary-wise: Who will step in at cornerback opposite Averett? And where will Fitzpatrick play?

Fitzpatrick began the year playing cornerback and nickel back before moving to safety after Eddie Jackson suffered a season-ending injury in late October. It's unclear whether he'll remain at safety or move back to cornerback.

Brown, the team's nickel back the final seven games, can also play cornerback. The former five-star recruit started two games at cornerback as a freshman in 2014.

While Alabama loses Humphrey, it returns five of its top six defensive backs from the secondary it played with after Jackson got hurt. There are also several young former top recruits among the defensive backs that will be in the mix for bigger roles, like Class of 2016 four-stars Shyheim Carter and Nigel Knott.

"We've got a lot more experience probably next year," Humphrey said, "so we'll definitely be pretty good."

Yeah, the DL is concerning for sure.

Agree. If Buggs and/or Raekwon Davis can step up, I think we'll be fine with our starters (along with Hand & Payne) but our depth will take an even bigger hit than last year...

Plenty? I disagree. No LB we've had under Saban knew the defense like Ro did. He was always watching film...read an article stating how he watched a lot of film with both Saban and Smart. I recall watching games his junior year (2009) and Saban/Smart trusted him to change/call the D much of the time. I loved it when offenses would line up, see our defense, and then look over to their sideline to see the call; most times Ro would immediately step up and change the D without lookin' over at Smart or Saban.

We've had great linebackers at Bama and there are probably several that might've been better physically. I think Foster's the most physically gifted LB we've had at Bama. But as a player Ro knew every aspect of the Saban's system...he was the defense at Bama...and he started as a freshman on.

Love this quote from Saban 'bout McClain:

"Rolando McClain is one of my favorite people in the whole world. He's one of my favorite players in the whole world," Saban said after Wednesday's practice. "He actually came here the first year we were here and had never won a game and didn't have a very good team, and he certainly became the alpha dog leader of some really good teams that probably had a lot to do with the whole turning around of the program and getting a lot of the players to buy in and do a lot of the things the way we needed to do them so we could be successful as a team.

"There are a lot of players that contributed to that, but Rolando McClain was one of the first and did it as well as anybody."

I thought that Frazier and OJ Smith looked pretty damn good when they got in there this year. I liked what I saw.

Saw one reporter projecting that Frazier would be the other starter (beside Payne and Hand)...

Up until the playoffs, Frazier deservedly had been written off as a significant contributor.

Then he made some major plays against Washington and Clemson that put him back on track for a spot.

If he were to earn a starting role, I wonder out of him and Payne would move from NG?
