Western Carolina Coach Mark Speir Tears Into ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit
John Reed-USA TODAY Sports
This past week ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit expressed his displeasure for top-ranked SEC teams like No. 1 Alabama playing smaller teams like Western Carolina, calling it the “the worst thing that goes on in college football.” After Western Carolina lost to Alabama 48-14 on Saturday, WCU head coach Mark Speir tore into Herbstreit. Per AL.com...
quote:

“A guy had a silver spoon in his mouth all his life, Ohio State, prima donna state quarterback talking about, ‘It’s an embarrassment,’” “He ain’t ever coached.”

“I’m just proud of FCS football,” Speir said. “I’m proud of our football team. I hope America doesn’t listen to a guy who sits behind a mic that hasn’t ever done it with that silver spoon in his mouth. He never had probably a bloody nose or a callus like some of these guys.”

I don't get the personal attack on Herbstreit. The guy started at QB at Ohio State. I don't see how that makes him a prima donna or the "silver spoon" argument.

I don't know who's right or wrong. All I know is that this coach comes across as a little bitter with a hint of jealousy.

Good on him for standing up for his players and team, but most of the comments were directed at the timing of the game, not that it was happening. Too many SEC teams were taking a week off by way of scheduling rent-a-wins.

Lame. Make analogies that you want your team to be a DAWG or keep your FCS mouth shut.

Coach Speir is standing up for his players and the players who love to play
but play at FCS level. Herbie is a mouthpiece with many too many opinions.

I'd be willing to bet Kirk has had a few bloody noses. But we are probably talking about different things.

This guy is a BEAST. He will be Merlins replacement.

I get the guy standing up for his program and for his level of football. But Herbstreit is right. It might be good for Alabama's motives and it might be good for Western Carolina's motives. But it's not a good game for fans.

Now Gameday will never come to a Western Carolina game...
