Average ACT score was 28-32

Not many football players perform at this level academically. Even most regular students including the ones mentally capable of doing so do not perform this well academically on the grander scale.

Even out of all the qualified applicants only 50% of those people were allowed admittance into UM.

As messed up and stupid as the comment was for a recruiter to say especially on an in home visit...would he have said it if it wasn't true?

The fact that his father and him think he could get into UM without football shows how dumb they actually are. I doubt this guy has 30 ACT score. Now, Ohio State he could get into no problem...

Just a case of not understanding the constraints within which you operate. Having said that, he was most likely right.

Very few regular people would qualify for Michigan, however I think this was the wrong way to say it. You're supposed to be a good salesman. Don't blow smoke up his arse, but don't insult him either.

What some of the people I've seen around the Internet who have commented on this story (yes the TDers on this post along) don't get, is that why would he have to say this in the first place. He could have just easily explained how a degree from Michigan is a lot more regarded out in the professional world. He could have even exaggerated a claim that a Michigan degree will be seen way better in the job market than a Nebraska one.

Despite what people say, defending what the coach said is BS. You don't try to recruit anybody to your school and say he couldn't get into the school on grades alone, even if that is true.

Why would he go to Michigan without football? He has offers from everyone! Why in the frick would they bring this up? Like those dipshit coaches would qualify at Michigan

He's right...but that's NOT what you say to someone you're trying to recruit. He might be able to get into Nebraska without football though.

Yeah, I don't get why they would even bring it up. I doubt the kid was implying he was planning to apply as a regular student and then walk-on.

But, as to the larger point, I get what the coach was trying (and failing miserably) to say. A lot of kids applying to schools like UM need a hook since grades and test scores by themselves might not be enough.

What a retard, he got mad because they told him the truth. Its not like you can get into Michigan with a 3.1.

Michigan had already offered the kid a scholly, so that point was moot. Why even bring it up? UM dropped the ball on that one.

I love how Big 10 schools try to some how make their football players sound like real student athletes. Stories like this along with twitter messages by the OSU QB wanting to play football instead of playing school are excellent examples to tear that b.s. claim that their academics some how apply to the program.

well, many athletes cant get into school based solely on their academics. Sometimes the truth hurts pop, and you have to deal with it. no story here

The entire college of Mich St. exists because people dont have the grades to get into UM.
