On Arkansas catching the guy stealing 3rd---how was that not a balk? Posted by MedDawg The pitcher started his windup, brought his leg back, then forward and down, then turned around and threw it to 3rd and caught the guy stealing. Reply Back to Top
Very good spin move. It was close to being a balk but the umps were right on top of it. Reply Back to Top
quote: I didn't see it, but he wouldn't have been pitching from the windup with a runner on. From the stretch, you can lift your leg, turn, and throw to second, or hold onto it and throw elsewhere. eta: Actually from your description, it sounds like there might have been runners on the corners and he step towards first from the stretch, then threw to third. ![]() This post was edited on 5/5 at 2:14 pm Reply Back to Top |
It wasn't even really that close to a balk. He lifted his leg then turned and threw the ball to third. His Leg did not go forward at all. The runner left too early. Reply Back to Top

quote: Runners on 1st and 2nd and the runner from 2nd left too early and he lifted his leg and then threw over to 3rd, wasn't even close to a balk. Reply Back to Top |

Lefties can throw to first and righties to third w/o stepping off first. You can fake to third and throw to first if your foot is off the mound. This post was edited on 5/5 at 7:05 pm Reply Back to Top
You'd have to come off the rubber first. You can't fake to first and go to third regardless of being a lefty or righty unless you step off the mound. Reply Back to Top
You're going to have to step a long danged way to step off the entire mound to make a pick move. Reply Back to Top
It was awfully close, I couldn't even tell on the highlights. I recorded it on my phone and have it uploading to YouTube, one sec and you guys can see for yourselves. Reply Back to Top

Thanks for the Youtube video. It's close, but I am gonna say it's legitimate. It looks like the pitcher initially tried to pick off 2nd, but realized the runner was stealing 3rd, so he quickly turned and threw to 3rd. It's just like faking to 2nd but throwing to 3rd, perfectly legal. The only problem I have with this play is the pitcher never completely turned to 2nd (notice where his front foot landed: not towards 2nd), so basically his first move (pick off 2nd / fake to 2nd) was never completed before he threw to 3rd. Depends on how strict the umpire was, this could be called a balk. But everything happened so fast, it was understandable the umpire didn't call it. Reply Back to Top
I don't think it was even close, you see guys do that ALL the time when looking a guy back to 2nd. But, hey, who knows. Reply Back to Top
I dont think his foots on the rubber Reply Back to Top
It looks like he was just spinning to 2nd but never planed on throwing the ball. Once he realized the guy took of he turned and threw to 3rd. The slowness of the leg kick is what is odd and therefore makes people want to think it was a balk. Reply Back to Top
