Yellowstone would be an extinction event for the American way of life.

Not if but when it goes off it will be a cleansing of mankind from earth. That is if mankind is still around when it blows. Scientist predict it will be 1000s of years away. So who knows what will become of man BT then.

Yellowstone could be an extinction event for mankind. Would probably create a human bottleneck like the Toba eruption approximately 70,000 years ago.

A severe reduction, yes. Extinction, I don't think so. An already small human population some 70,000 years ago was reduced to about 10-15,000 people.

Today there are nearly 7.5 billion people on earth and they're scattered all over the planet. I would guess that more than half would die because of a supervolcano, depending largely where it was located. There are about 20 supervolcanoes located around the earth.

I plan to go to Yellowstone this summer. It will be 25 years from when 2 friends and I work there for the summer 1990. what a great way to spend a summer. If any of you young punks still in college need something fun to do go to Yellowstone and work for the summer it is an absolutely amazing experience.I just hope that she doesn't blow this summer while I'm there. Scratch that, actually if she's going to blow in my lifetime might as well be there to feel her roar.

If you were standing on site when it blew, I don't think you'd feel much of anything

You mean an extinction event for mankind. The last time if erupted, ash and debris landed as far south as present day Louisiana. It kept the planet in darkness for centuries.

If I could choose where I was when it blows, it would be in Yellowstone. Just get it over with.

It would be catastrophic but not complete annihilation. Not with today's technology and resources.

Please enlighten me on the earlier eruptions in Yellowstone, like the Mesa Falls tuft. Or just the effects of "smaller" eruptions like Mt Tabora in 1815.

The last super-eruption was approximately 650,000 years ago. There were several species of humans living at that time, mostly in Africa. They made it through the eruption and the subsequent effects of the volcano's ash on the atmosphere.

Think positive and take comfort knowing if this going to happen, anyone with shite-for-brains will cease to exist. That's a good thing, right?
