The South Carolina High School League executive committee on Tuesday approved a plan to move to five classifications beginning in the 2016-17 school year.

The motion passed by a 10-5 vote. A motion to move to six classifications was defeated by an 8-7 vote before the committee approved the move to five classes.

It is the first time since 1968 that the state has varied from four classifications.

Under the current four classification system, there are seven state champions in football — two each in 4A, 2A and A, and one in 3A.

A draft of the new realignment is expected to be presented by August and in place by September, according to the league. The number of schools in each classification also will be determined over the next several weeks.

I wonder if they are going to go by straight student population or have something else.
