My friend found a house "at Belhaven" that is about 1-1.5 miles from UMMC. Is that neck of the woods safe?

The close proximity to UMMC would be very convenient, but should safety be a concern?

TIA

Yes.. It's a very safe area, but it's full of rainbows

It is relatively safe if you are smart. If you a gullible knit-whit then may not be a smart place to live.

Well, it depends. If it's Belhaven proper then it's pretty safe. Belhaven Heights, though, is not nearly as safe.

Mostly safe, but does the water work? Streets are usually dug up and city doesn't repair for about 2 years. Watch for orange cones errrrywhere.

We lived there when we first got married before moving to fondren. Good neighborhood. Glad we finally got done with school and got the hell out of Jackson though ...

I've got plenty of friends who live down that way. The only problem that I can remember them consistently having is people stealing/opening UPS or FEDEX packages off of their doorsteps. But beyond that, a lot of people do it and enjoy it.

I'm thinking about living here next year also due to proximity to UMMC also. I thought about flowood, but I'd like to avoid Lakeland drive

I've heard good things about Fondren. It doesn't appear to be far from Belhaven.

Thanks to everyone for the input. I love input.

I will my second year, but she is getting her masters in accounting next year. So it will be a guy I had some classes with next year. We have started looking, but we haven't had any luck finding a place we want yet. What about you?

If you work Hospital hours the commute isn't bad.

I would rather give money to Alabama than Hinds County / Jackson personally.

I lived in the Vieux Carre (right off of I-55 and in Fondren) when I moved to Jackson. I then bought a house in Fondren (on border with Woodland Hills) on Crane Blvd.

Having lived in Jackson for 6 years, and having had friends that lived in Belhaven and knowing their crime experiences (I don't know anyone that wasn't a victim that lived in Belhaven), I'd recommend Fondren over Belhaven.

Ok thanks for the info. Me and my buddy looked at Vieux Carre so maybe they have some openings if we decide to live there

Swayzeballa: I also dread Jackson. Why cant they move the freaking med school to oxford?

If they do have a spot, try to make sure the it's not right up against the interstate. The downstairs units are fine there, and the first floor of the upstairs units are OK, but the highest floors that are against the interstate, where the bedrooms are, can get a little loud at night.

Thanks for the info.

I've heard good things about Fondren. I'm not sure of the details regarding the Belhaven place yet, but I should know soon. I'm very unfamiliar with the Jackson area for the most part, so the input is helpful.
