If you watched it.

Is Scientology the modern day People's Temple?

Will we eventually see another Jonestown?

I watched it. I don't think Scientology is much different than any other religion.

Clearly, scientology and other religions share so many similarities, I'm not sure why its not respected.

I was working on a long, sarcastic post, but then I lost interest. Basically you're wrong.

i agree to an extent. i don't think christians have much room to criticize islam, hindus, or mormons. we all have to have some faith in the supernatural to get us over the hump of belief.

Scientology however...

Put it this way, what would your view be on Catholocism, Judaism, Islamism, etc had they been founded within the last century?

What if The Bibke had been written 50 years ago?

Compare the sociological aspects of Scientology to any one of the more egalitarian Abrahamic religions and one notices stark differences immediately. You're probably not able to shed your own negative biases enough to be able to do it.

FIFY

I don't see how anyone can watch that and not draw some very strong parallels to cults we have seen. I wouldn't associate Waco or Jonesboro with a legitimate mainstream religion, I associate them with cults. There's a distinct difference in supporting your crazy "in the name of God" versus an actual mainstream religion.

Read the book. Saw the documentary last night, and I would really recommend reading the book. It goes in to a LOT more detail. Also that Jason Beghe interview from 2007 when he first leaves the church is fascinating and must see.

I mean Mormonism was invented like 200 years ago, in a similar fashion to Scientology. But... it's different in a lot of ways. I would read the book and watch that Jason Beghe YouTube interview. It's eye opening.

The book has actually been in my to-read list for a while now. Probably get going this summer. I'm pretty fascinated on how religions form.

Obviously Scientology goes to the extreme with many of their practices. In that regard, it is very different from the mainstream religions today. But I don't think their end goal is all that different. The mainstream religions have had many decades to progress with the times and experience many generations of indoctrination.

I watched the teaser interview, don't have time to watch the full 2 hour interview right now.

It's funny that it like just became mainstream to "out" scientology, Adam Carolla and Dr. Drew were calling them a cult back in the 90's.

I'll tell you what's not stupid: Becoming super duper wealthy in one's lifetime. I've spent the better part of 3 decades searching for absolute, unadulterated TRUTH. If there's one thing I've learned thus far it's this: It's better to have money than to not have money.

A lesser thing I know is that the greatest path to 'MegaWealth' is founding a non-profit organization. Sounds ironic. Such makes it more likely.

Found a non-profit organization and stay its CFO. Lots of tax breaks and other inherent immunities. And the guy at the top will naturally be the only soul who knows how much has been donated. Get my drift? Need I elaborate? It should be clear enough.

Plus the CFO can determine his own salary, to be removed off the top of the gross. And to remain unknown, if you know what I'm saying.

(If not then don't worry about what I'm saying).

As non-profits go a pay-per-view, pay-as-you-go, pay-to-play religion is frickING GENIUS!!!!!!!

Definitely read it. I would read it with the idea that it's more than just Hubbard forming a religion and Miscavige running it once he died. It's just fascinating on so many more levels.

Which is the saddest part of the whole thing. Is the people raised in it, and how through auditing they are prisoners of their own confessions and ignorance to the outside world.

Definitely give yourself adequate time, and definitely watch it. It's one of the most open and honest interviews you'll ever see. Ironically enough, all the "auditing" from Scientology makes Jason Behge VERY self aware of what he's going through. You see a full gambit of emotions and probably one of the more honest views in to another person's mind you'll EVER see. The guy has been arguably my favorite actor ever since that interview. His best friend is David Duchovny, so my inner X-Files geek thought that was awesome, but you see a guy on film/tv that you KNOW went through some fricked up shite and it's really hard not to root for him to get vengeance on the thing that caused him so much pain.
