Is Howland really that good?

On March 25, 2013, Howland was fired by UCLA.[11][12] In his 10 years with the Bruins, he had a .685 winning percentage, which ranked sixth of the eight coaches that followed Wooden.[13]

3 final fours ranks first for coaches since Wooden. He has as impressive a resume as anyone in the SEC not named Donovan or Calipari.

How in the heck did he get so close to 50% winning percentage with 3 final fours?

.685 isn't close to .500. Billy has a .709.

Howland is probably the 3rd most successful coach in UCLA's history behind Wooden and Jim Harrick.

Yeah, look at the end of that era. There was a massive amount of smoke re: that last class of his. Suspensions, transfers, two inquiries regarding academic eligibility before the kids ever played a second of college ball, a Dad who allegedly may have lied about his son's age and amateur status before signing on with UCLA, and you can say what you want, but the trend of his Bruin tenure-while not an elevator shaft headed down-was nowhere near what you may try to spin it as.
