Money? That was a little before my time Can't find anything on the Internet about it from minimal Google searches.

Either way, he's nothing but a Tiger nowadays...

He is a great commentator for Bball games. Rod Bramblett is awful at bball.

The obvious answer is because he took the VCU job

VCU offered a significant raise. AU was like meh, we can replace you and the big alumni were like let him go he's too country and folksy and that embarrasses us.

Welp, that clearly worked out well for us.

I can believe the money part.

But "too country and folksy"?

An athletic department that had PATRICK FAIN DYE as AD thought someone was "too country and folksy"?

Yeah... I ain't buyin' that one, brah.

My recollection is foggy on this. However, I think there was some disagreement and Sonny left "by mutual agreement" probably instead of being fired.

I recall being somewhat surprised, but not a lot.

Sonny had a habit of saying stuff like this: LINK
Dye kept his tie on and mostly kept his inner country boy under control until after he retired.

Mutual agreement is probably right as we were 9-19 in Sonny's last year after 5 previous NCAA tournament appearances. His overall record at Auburn was competitive but not great. His first 5 years the best record was 15-13. Then came 5 tournament appearances, but the record each year was anywhere from 18-13 to 22-11. He recruited some great players but wasn't much for motivation and discipline so the team often underperformed until tournament time.

Sonny was just "worn out" from trying to keep the program on par with Wimp Sanderson & Bama.

I also recall he almost left once- changed his mind- and then ultimately left at a later time.

I did not percieve that he was forced out.

It was a combination of things. he didn't feel wanted here, VCU offered a big raise and he was tired of the preferential treatment that UK received. His teams outplayed UK several times but some questionable officiating allowed UK to win.
