Thank you for being realistic. If USA rugby could pull our tier 1 athletes to rugby and train at it for years, we would be really good.

I mean isn't the U.S. argument for everything? We're good at everything.. but if we're not we just need to put more effort into it and then we'd be.

Yep. If the beautiful game were our number one sport, we'd rival Brazil for the most world cups. Imagine guys like Michael Vick streaking up the wing, LeBron at forward, Magic distributing from the midfield. Would be glorious.

Nah. It doesn't really work that way in soccer. If it did, Ghana would be in every World Cup final. We don't currently (and never have had) have the infrastructure to produce elite soccer players in the US.

Even given the proper training (if we had it) Lebron is probably too tall to be a good field player. Same with Magic.

Maybe, if you could then put them through a rigorous 5 year training program.

Rugby is merely football without pads and a bit more of an aerobic element to the conditioning. I am pretty damn confident that there are enough skill position players who were collegiate All-Americans but not NFL-quality players who could dominate this sport.

Wrong. Rugby requires the spatial awareness of basketball and is something football players have a hard time adjusting to. Movement off the ball. The conditioning is also very different, as you mentioned, as a rugby game flows like a soccer game in that there are no stops other than to restart the game following a penalty or ball out of bounds. The only thing rugby is similar to football in is you tackle the ball carrier and kick extra points through posts.

This is true if provided the rigorous 5 year training program to put those athletes through. It is very naive to think you can group athletes together with no experience and take on the world's elite at that sport.
