Happy Birthday to the Republic of Texas

We are celebrating our 179 birthday as a separate country today, March 2nd, 1836.
Made one positive move and one mistake in 1845. We ditched Oklahoma, Kansas, New Mexico, Colorado and Wyoming and became part of the United States.
Thanks to men like Davy Crockett and William Barrett Travis who saw the negatives of their home states and fled to Texas, to become heroes.
Crockett, a senator from another southern state, had the best speech on the US Senate floor....."You can all go to Hell, I'm going to Texas"......and so it began.

fun fact! Stephen F. Austin attended Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky, the same school Jefferson Davis attended before transferring to West Point. The school has two American presidents, but no presidents of the United States.
