How similar is Rick Ray's situation to Croom's situation?

Posted this over on the rant and I wasn't sure how many of you would see it so I brought it over here. Basically I said that Ray's situation with your basketball program is almost identical to Croom's situation with your football program after Sherrill. Here's the post.

quote:

Stans, as good of a recruiter and coach as he was, ran their program in to the ground the last 3 years he was there. Ray reminds me a lot of Croom (inb4racist) after Sherrill. Sherrill was a great coach for State but ran the program into the ground his last few years. Croom, while a horrible coach, cleaned up the shite and put down a foundation of hard working players for Mullen to inherit and build their football program into what it is now.

Ray is doing the same thing. His situation is identical to the same situation Croom was given. He's cleaning the shite out of the program and building a base of hard working players so the next guy that comes in can build upon it. State won't stay down in basketball for very long.

Agree or disagree?

Definitely agree. I think Ray is a bit better of a coach than Croom. Wished he'd get rid of George Brooks so that Gavin Ware would actually improve from year to year.

WELL.

Similarities:

- Black.
- Neither won games.
- Both ran an offense that doesn't work.
- Both promoted strong defense and its really just ok.
- Both inherited pretty crappy situations.
- Both were bad hires.
- Both turned the ball over a lot.

Differences:

- Ray is very well spoken.
- Ray hasn't been axed to leave yet.
- Croom had somewhat of a roster when he got here.
- Croom fielded a >.500 team in year 3.

Outside the two of them. Stans fielded better teams a lot more consistently than Jackie did. And we didn't get smashed with recruiting violations.

True but you had all of your best players leave early or transfer. That was almost as detrimental.

Croom finished 2007 at 8-5. And there are a whoooole lot more basketball coaches than football, can't agree with that. He's coaching what is easily a top 75 program for basketball down to like a 200+ RPI.

At the same time, you can't really put it all on him. Stans left him a shite show and he had to completely rebuild. And it's hard to sell big time recruits in basketball on coming to rebuild a program. Granted Ray should take a page out of Kennedy's book and get transfer players like Moody and Henderson. They have helped Kennedy get over the hump as far as getting to the tournament.

I will say that, if somehow they stick with him and this works out, Scott Stricklin is a genius. I will feed them my money and never again question a hire.

I didn't know either of them were black until skirp's post above.

I agree with you on all of it.

However I've spent the better part of this season trying to convince myself it's not a similar situation, probably in vain. I think Ray can and will get over the hump in the next few years, Ray's teams will be able to compete in the SEC, but will we get to The Dance and be able to do anything in The Dance is a matter of debate.

I think the ceiling of potential with Rick Ray is somewhat low, and I say this liking Ray and hoping for his success. Ideally he will hand over the reigns to the guy who will get us there, much like Croom did.

I would agree with the similarities in the way it looks but as far as "building a foundation of hard players" for the next guy... It doesn't really work like that in college hoops like it does in football. I also think you're giving too much credit to Sly Croom for Mullen's success.

Stephen Hawking could compete in SEC hoops.

Compete, meaning compete with the likes of Kentucky and Florida.

Mainly because they can count and know that 20+ wins are better than 12.
