There was already tension because the Union wasn't allowing the southern states to trade with other nations themselves (which was shitty of the Union to do). But yes. Slavery was what started the whole thing. Anyone that denies that is just wrong.

Slavery was a state right, but I get what you're saying.

Every other factor traces back to slavery though.

It's a interesting question. While slavery was definitely played a role, economics was at its core IMO. The south cotton supply and economy was being controled by northern states which had the majority of the control of the government. The north wanted the fruits of the southern economy but had no way to control it. When the south began its secession attempts, I don't think they did so just to retain the use of slaves. I think they did it to regain the profits of thier economy.

Obviously, the economy was built on the back of slavery but that is not what actually started the war IMO. I just don't believe that northerns were that concerned with ending slavery that they started a war over it.

To sum it up, it was about money not skin color.

It was part of the reason. There was a conglomeration of many things that led to it. States Rights being the primary.. and yes.. slavery was a huge factor of that.

The reason their economy was profitable was due to slave labor.

Uh no.

Some states just thought the fed gov had too much power in general and the states couldn't control everything like they wanted whether it was trade, slavery, taxes etc.

Much of the economic system in the US favored the North and exploited the South.

However, all of these issues could have been worked out.

Slavery was the only issue that was unresolvable short of bloodshed. No slavery, no war.

100% agree. All about money.

quote:

By 1860 the cotton trade held 57% of the value of all American exports worth $191,000,000 turning the South into a cotton empire

Interesting fact.
