This guy did some interesting online geographic surveys of how people define their own regions. Midwesterners were asked to identify fellow Midwestern states and Southerners were asked to identify fellow Southern states.

Midwest Survey

South Survey

Not much to my surprise, neither region really seems to claim Missouri. We are truly no-man's land, as the author points out. Although from what I can tell it looks like Oklahoma and West Virginia are even less claimed than Missouri.

I figured rantards who hate Mizzou would like his quote
quote:

Also, does anyone know what’s going on with Missouri? Mostly excluded from the South and Midwest, it appears to be the geographic equivalent of the last kid picked during dodgeball.

Texas should be split 3 ways. From Houston and just a bit west of I-45 all the way east is the Southern. Around Dallas and up into pand handle is Midwest. From San Antonio west and south of are all part of the West. Austin is a part of the Pacific Northwest.

What does the other 11% think Georgia is if it's not Southern?

Yeah similarly Missouri ideally would be split 2 ways. Below the red line is more Southern, above it is more Midwestern. I've been to a lot of the southern states, and one of the thickest Southern drawls I've ever heard came from a girl I took on a date from the Missouri bootheel.

It would be interesting if someone would do a breakdown by counties so we could see the divisions in Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Kentucky, and West Virginia.

No idea. None of the states received 100% in either survey. In fact the highest percent "midwest" was Illinois with only 80%.

I think the highest "South" percentages were 90ish for Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi.

Those 11% probably couldn't point out Georgia on a map.

These are fun.

El Paso Texas is southern. As is Amarillo, right? And the Oklahoma panhandle where you're a few miles from Kansas, Colorado and New Mexico....southern, right? Does it have more in common with Chicago or Atlanta?

I think its safe to say that Western Arkansas is more culturally affiliated with North Texas than it is anything in Mississippi or Alabama. But Eastern Arkansas is Deep South as it gets, IMO.

State borders are dumb.

If this was a random sample of Americans, my guess is that less than 1/3 could accurately identify all the States highlighted.

Even though it's only 10% of people surveyed that think Ohio is southern..... I can't quite get past it.

Much like Kansas, Missouri is geographically and everything else average at best.
