Alternate history: what would you have chosen/supported

In 1846-47, the United States was at war with Mexico. We initially took what is now the American Southwest, and tried to sue for peace. The Mexican government refused to sign any peace agreement that involved the cession of more land the the USA, so the decision was made to invade central mexico.
Around this time, there was a minority opinion to annex Baja California, Sonora, and Chihuahua as well.
There was another movement call the "All of Mexico" movement, that was dropped because of Northern fear of Mexico being divided into too many slave states, and Southern fear of too many Latinos.
Both of these were abandoned. If you had been able to make the decision at the time, would you have gone with the historic outcome of just Alta California? Or tried for more?

Baja, while cool to visit, is pretty much a wasteland. Chihuahua isn't much better.
All of Mexico couldn't have been swung; we would have been occupiers and never accepted.
Now, all of the resources of Mexico would be awesome. It's a real travishamockery that a country so rich in potential and gifted with such resources continually shits the bed. I

I would have chosen to take all of Mexico, because it would be easy to build a huge wall with a fiery moat across the skinny southern part.

I would have chosen "All of Mexico" because it would have prevented the current loss of "All of America" to the invaders from the south.

Take the northern half of Mexico. Allow popular sovereignty to dictate slave issue as per the contemporary Kansas-Nebraska Act.

As the only Expert of Mexico on this board, I'd definitely have voted to take it all. There are way more resources than people actually know, especially in the agricultural area. The tourism would have been amazing, cartels a non-factor and a much smaller border to make defensible for land crossing.

Would have taken all of Baja and Sonora y Chihuaha.
Baja would be incredible beachfront property for retirement communities if it had been under white people control for the past 150 years. Plus Gulf of California, fishing, etc.

I would've McArthur'd it and stopped at the Isthmus of Panama. Good place to set up a narrow border crossing that could have easily been controlled.

I would not change a thing.
Now, the prospect of invading Mexico TODAY and taking everything to, and including, The Panama Canal, has been the subject of some of my hypnagogic musings.

In my opinion, we and Israel should invade the Baja again, and then we have the Jews move there. The Jews like deserts and hate Muslims, and the only difference between the Sea of Galilee and the Sea of Cortez is world class sports fishing. We will wait until around 11:30 at night when all of Mexico passes out, and then take it over by the time they wake up. Once they've got the land secure, they can then send the Mexicans back over to Israel, scrape off the top 8 inches of soil, spread it over the Penusula, and then start afresh.

That's why I added sending Mexicans back to Israel to scrap off all the surface dirt. God's already blessed that soil, so just bring the soil over here.
