So for those of you that don't know, in soccer (except the MLS) instead of conferences like we currently have in college football they have divisions that are fluid. At the end of the season teams that play well advance to the top division while teams that don't are relegated to the lower division.

I think this format would be awesome to see in college football and would solve all the scheduling and committee nonsense we have because you play everyone in your division and theres no need for a playoff or championship game. Simply the best record wins the division.

15 teams in each division, 14 game seasons and you play everyone in your division. Top 3 advance to the higher division, bottom 3 are relegated to the lower division

It'll never happen but for fun, if the change was implemented next season I think the divisions would look like this based on overall record. Schedule wasn't really factored in except for the smaller non Power 5 schools

Division 1:
1. Alabama
2. Arizona State
3. Baylor
4. Clemson
5. Florida State
6. Georgia
7. Georgia Tech
8. Michigan State
9. Mississippi State
10. Missouri
11. Ohio State
12. Oregon
13. TCU
14. UCLA
15. Wisconsin

Division 2:
1. Arizona
2. Auburn
3. Duke
4. Kansas State
5. Louisville
6. LSU
7. Mississippi
8. Nebraska
9. Notre Dame
10. Oklahoma
11. Southern Cal
12. Stanford
13. Texas A&M
14. Utah
15. Washington

Division 3:

1. Arkansas
2. Boise State
3. Boston College
4. Florida
5. Iowa
6. Maryland
7. Minnesota
8. North Carolina State
9. Oklahoma State
10. Penn State
12. Rutgers
13. South Carolina
14. Tennessee
15. West Virginia

Division 4:

1. California
2. Colorado State
3. Illinois
4. Kentucky
5. Miami
6. Michigan
7. North Carolina
8. Northern Illinois
9. Northwestern
10. Oregon State
11. Pitt
12. Texas
13. Utah State
14. Virginia
15. Virginia Tech

soccer is ghey and cfb is about traditions. That is why we will never have a true playoff but an odd mix of playoffs and bowls. Your divisions plan would split up alot of traditional rivarlies and ruin college football.

The season will end with 2 Championships. Championships for each division obviously, with Division 1's title carrying the most prestige.

But also an Open Cup, which all team are eligible based on records. A Division 1 team will win 90% of the time, but smaller school will make some noise every year.

The Divisions will need to be smaller so that Inter-Division games can be played to maintain rivalries.

One of the signature offseason threads. Now just need some Mt Rushmore threads and arguments over best SEC towns and we will be cooking with gas

I like this. I wanted to add something like this but didn't have the patience

No. The appeal of this format is that every team in the same division plays the same teams. Theres no complaining about Bama getting to play UT while LSU has to play UF.

If teams want to schedule inter-division games they can, but it won't count towards their record and they still have to play the 14 teams in their division.

I can't count how many times I've thought to myself "If only college football were as entertaining as soccer!"

Creating the divisions based entirely on 1 season is idiotic.

It's a cool structure but would be stupid for a sport where each player only has a 4 year career. Would be much harder to recruit to a lower division team would have to move up twice in 4 years to have a shot to win their division

i have thought of something like this before.

The major drawback are of course traditional rivalries, but also the fluctuating nature of college football allows teams to get good fast.

under this system we would have lost out on Auburn's 2013 team.

It could work, power 5 are your leagues, do champions league type tourney at end. Do relegation and promotion within the power 5.

This actually sounds like a pretty damn good idea, of course we would need to figure out the classic rivalry games and how that would work but overall I can actually see this being practical.

They could but they wouldn't count towards your record.

So dumb on so many levels. Auburn went 0-8 in conference then went to the natty. Relegation and promotion is a shitty system. I follow soccer and I think it's stupid. Parity measures are so much better.

So then why is everyone freaking out about that?
