Our Defense is just poorly coached

It just is. It's the elephant in the room.

Considering our recruiting, there's just no excuse for how awful our defense is. None.

Look at TCU - Ole Miss. Our defense just doesn't do that anymore. We are not capable of dominating a good-ish team. No one's scared of us. And those are middling recruits for TCU, at least compared to ours.

We couldn't design an effective "exotic" blitz to save our fricking lives. They never work. Never.

I don't even want to get into our secondary because that's a post unto itself, but holy fricking shite. Eddie Jackson is just abysmal. Our primary defensive coaches are secondary guys and our secondary is awful.

Our defense is trending downwards. That being said, it was an entertaining season. Blake kind of sucked at times, but is still one of my favorite players. On to the Bama basketball NIT watch!

That TCU team also gave up 61 points to Baylor. CFB is in a transition stage and the defenses just havent quite caught up yet.

Pretty much my thoughts. Nobody really wants to go there because that would put us in the uncomfortable position of questioning Saban's mortality, but this year's secondary is the equivalent of a head coach who is supposedly a great QB coach (Meyer, Mullen, etc) trotting out Brandon Avalos to throw 4 picks each game.

We need a DB coach who can take these incoming freshman and get them on the field early. To much talent to be just watching from the bench.

You're letting facts get in the way of my mildly depressed bitchfest.

That being said, I'm still baffled by our secondary.

If you're looking on the bright side, I guess you'd say Cyrus has improved, and he has. But how is Eddie still this bad?

Cyrus would be a really good nickel/third corner, but he's our best corner. He's Marquis Johnson.

Like I said in another thread. Kirby Smart is greatly overrated.

You seem to be an expert. Would you like me to give Saban call to set up an interview?

No, but I post on the SEC rant

I have no fricking clue what to do with our corners either. Turn around doesn't seem like expert advice.

This question was the exact question I asked about Cyrus after the Iron Bowl last year. I was convinced Cyrus couldn't cover my 93 year old grandmother. I was disappointed that he was still a starter for the WVU game. What does he do? Turn it around in the offseason and start playing like he is a shutdown corner.

I think I will sit out the Eddie Jackson bash fest until next year. He might be the next Cyrus Jones.

This is true. You never know. There's a lot of work to be done but I believe we are a playoff contender again next year.

I think we can be a much better team next year.

Lets face it, this team overachieved. I never thought they would win the SEC and make it to the playoff.

That would be nice, and is certainly possible. It just seems like the progression is slowing. Outside of Tony Brown, everyone (that's playing) has been around for at least two years. Maybe three years is what they need.

I mean when Dee was a freshman you were like yeah, he has no fricking clue whether we're in zone or man. But he figured it out.

These guys are progressing rather slowly.

It's not ALL coaching, some of these guys just don't perform. I have no doubt our safeties are taught to not get beat deep. Yet it keeps happening.

A lot of theses players just aren't talented or hungry enough. We need to find some alpha males and quick.

Offenses are also evolving. A lot of read option, qb-run teams where before there just wasn't a lot of that. What great offense did we play in 2009 or 2011?

I really liked this team, and was about to say that exact thing, but considering we've had the number one recruiting class for like five years in a row, are we maybe not allowed to use the word overachieve?

How many 3rd in forevers did we have this year...no blitz no pressure and then wide open receivers?

Very true chatt, changes the whole complexity of how you scheme and call a game.

I agree 100%. Lots of people are talking about the secondary, but let's face it..although Ragland had a helluva year, where are the McClains, Hightowers, Moselys, and Upshaws? This linebacking corps can''t compare with those on the championship teams.

As far as corners go, ours seem to all be smaller that what Saban calls the prototype that he ideally wants to recruit.

And as far as recruiting class rankings, I stopped putting too much stock in those somewhere around Tyler Love's junior year.

Not at all. Even with consistently #1 recruiting classes, sometimes the timing at certain positions is off. Look at the QB situation this year, for example. Some of those highly rated QBs transferred, leaving us with Sims, and then Coker transfers in. I don't think anyone would say that Blake Sims didn't overachieve.
