watching "30 for 30" about The Boz, got me thinking....

I was just a wee little lad back when the Boz was all the rage. But damn, he was a big deal in terms of media coverage.
Got me thinking about all the guys that seemed so much larger than life back then:
Herschel Walker,
Bo Jackson,
Deion Sanders etc.
We have more media now, and more great players even, i.e. Amari Cooper is an absolute stud. But it doesn't seem they are as hyped or "larger than life" as back in the 80's with less media.
Why does it seem this way? Is it the difference between watching them as a young boy and an adult? Have we just gotten "over it" ?

Legends grow on hearsay, and by word. There is too much exposure and access these days for that.

yeah, I guess "johnny football" is the closest I've seen recently. And like "the boz", JFF and Jameis are the villians, which means they are hot topics of conversation.
But I do think that point about hearsay "creating legends" is a great one. Tim Brown for example played for Notre Dame. I hated Notre Dame, never watched them, but I knew Tim Brown was the greatest receiver ever (along with "Rocket" Ishmael)

Nice thread.
I agree with some others about today's media is just everywhere. While cooper is great imo he isn't on that level either. So my answer is a mixture of the media growth and also tebow, cam, JFF were on that level that if it were like the 80's they'd have been larger than life.

Good thread. I'm watching the Bo Jackson 30 for 30 and Boz does make an appearance getting trucked by Bo.
I still have Bo's rookie card and a signed ball.
I consider him one of the greatest athletes to ever live. He was a joy to watch and it's a shame it ended too soon.
EDIT: To answer your question, today's stars are paper tigers. Athletes like Bo and MJ are far and few between.

Could not stand Boz or what he represented but there is no doubt that he is one of the best CFB players that I have watched. A shame the humility was so late to come.

One of the best that ever put em on in high school was Marcus Dupree.
I know this veers slightly from the OP intent but I think he could have been as good as Bo or Herschel with the right people around him.
Sad story.

The reason why Sanders was/is bigger than life is because he was the best defensive back to ever play the game of football. I have been watching football for over 35 years and there has never been anyone like him and there may never be anyone like him ever again.

Sounds like a guy who used to play round ball in Harlem by the name of Helicopter Jones.

Ummm no...fail. Tackling is also a part of football so that eliminates him. Now if you want to say he was the best in coverage, you could make a case for that.

Bo did not "run over" the Boz. That's part of that legend that grows through the years that somebody else brought up
