It's probably going to happen in most of your lifetimes, not mine.

So let's say we're at what, seven billion now?

When does it finally pop? When are there too many people on earth, too many for earth to support?

When does the reset button kick-in? When do people overtake the water and other natural resources' ability to recoup?

What should be done to slow it down ... or will the earth and mother nature take care of that on their own?

Mother Nature has various forms of correction up her sleeve:

- increase in super diseases
- increase in homosexuality
- increase the difficulty of raising children through behavioral expression and decrease our proclivity to procreate
- increase sterility
- etc

I wonder how accurate that is. Apart from Africa, much of the "developing world" has seen a recent decline in population growth.

Lots of the M.E. states are at or near replacement level, where a generation ago they were growing exponentially.

Contraception is spreading. So is media and knowledge.

Iran for example

Look at Mexico, compared to where they were in the 70s.

Some say a comet will fall from the sky, followed by meteor showers and tidal waves....

China is going to have a real problem in the next 15-20 years due to the one baby per family rule. With the preference for male children, the male population is already much larger than the female.

My concern for the rest of the world is disease. Something like ebola gets loose in India and that country is frickED.

We have to look at the big picture when assessing population growth. Two countries, Russia and Japan, have declining populations. Most countries outside Europe have significant growth rates. The highest growth rates are in Africa and Asia.

We have to look at the past to estimate future populations. We can see from the chart below that the earth is adding one billion humans every 12 years. Based on this growth rate there will be 10 billion people in 2050 and 14 billion by 2100. This is a worst case projection, but it's logical based on what the recent past shows us.

More sinister than population growth rates, however, is the rapid depletion of natural resources. The rest of the world, particularly China and India, want to be like the US. The world only has enough resources to support one country like the US into the next century.

When will it pop? I predict by 2075 we will be seeing the population at too great a level to be sustained by our ability to produce food and clean water. Already, there are pockets of famine and disease in Africa and South America because of poor nutrition. I think it will be common in much of the world by 2075.

China will decide it needs all of Eastern Russia. And it WILL take it. Russia will try to resist and fail.

Pop? Nah... the over-population of the continents and islands will in turn cause them to start tipping from their precarious positions atop underwater seamounts, thus dumping some of their populations into the ocean, and possibly breaking off and sinking to the sea floor. Then the population equilibrium will be restored.
