Each individual is responsible for themselves. Baton Rouge has plenty of crime to offer anyone....and really Athens is not even on the same playing field.
Athens biggest issue is the party atmosphere and the sheer amount of debauchery you can get yourself caught up in just from a night of drinking.
I've only been a few times but if I had known about Athens as a young buck there is no way in hell I would have ended up married at 21. I would be sitting here counting the number of STD's acquired from fine arse white girls.

I've had some of the worst/best nights of my life in downtown Athens.
I have a love-hate relationship for it. No way I could live there though.
