Good article on al.com

LINK

Highlights:

Ran a deficit of about 900k this past year. First deficit in at least 9 years.

Our football staff was the 4th highest paid in the nation last year.

We owe former coaches 7.1 million through 2017 in buyouts.

We have 15 million in reserves in the AD so this is easily affordable.

We sold out all football and basketball games for the first time in a long time.

We are expecting to be in good shape (back in the black I assume) this upcoming year due to selling out everything.

Bottom line - We owe a lot and are going to be paying our current staff a lot, but are in great shape with a frickton of money that is purely athletic department money in reserves and may have record setting revenues coming in now with all football and basketball demand selling out everything.

Athletics is a non profit that has reserves. I am not too worried about them losing money. Especially since all they really have to do to make that money back is increase student tickets 10$/year. Not like they won't sell out

They oversell the student section as it is, so they're already making more money tgan they should be there.

Don't forget the SEC Network money that the schools will start to get.

So you are saying there is excess demand for student tickets? Sounds like they should raise student ticket prices more than 10$ then.

Poorly run Athletic Department. Jay Jacobs is a joke. He is the Les Miles of ADs.

I'm saying if there were ever a need for us to have to evacuate quickly, it would be impossible to do. If you've seen the student section during a big game, we're packed in there like sardines.

Student tickets are already $140 for the season. I think I remember them being $95 back in 2006.

I think they were around the 75 mark back in 2000.

back then our coaching staff probably cost us 3 million total a year though. The coaching arms race is what is driving the ticket costs now, when you have 10 million in coaches a year you have to bring in revenues to pay for them.

Paid $10 for a book of 4 home games plus the Iron Bowl in 1979.

The only thing that has risen at a higher rate of inflation than AU student ticket prices is AU tuition.

For my entire first year's tuition and student activity fees, I paid $600.

No, I didn't leave off a zero. 600 bucks

Not necessary. I've got two kids in highschool now. The older one wants to attend Belmont, where tuition is currently $14,400 a semester.

Out of state for AU is only $700 less than that. What goes around, comes around.

The bottom line, if you hire coaches that excite the fan base, no matter the pay, you will get a ROI. We are junkies seeking the next high, Muschamps/Pearls of the world will most definitely open our wallets.
