This with a Grado cartridge LINK

Just play around on their site. Tons of good information for people starting out.

ETA: I'm fairly new to the whole thing. Been setting up a system for a little over a year now. There is a great thread on the Music board right now about what people are using.

Eh, it's not really better sound wise, to me. Just more of a hobby. I can get just as good if not way better sound out of my iPod with FLAC files and a decent amp. It's sort of like shaving with a badger brush, safety razor, and shave soap. Is it better than a 5 blade Fusion? Maybe. Maybe not, but there's an art form to it.

Plus, certain musicians are hiding little bonuses on vinyl.

Plus, the Fusion blades dont last long and cost way too much. Safety or straight razor all day.

The sound is better to me.

Also I loved the idea of going to purchase something physical. Getting something online just doesnt have that same feel.

I was telling a friend of mine that the other day. I bought the CD for Big Krit new album. Something about actually looking at the cover, taking it out of the plastic.

I can remember as a kid listening to my mom and dad vinyls. Its really more of reminder of old times for me. (I'm only 31)

Jack White is the leader in hiding stuff.

As far as vinyl sounding better, it just doesn't. It has a very unique sound but technically it doesn't have as broad of a range. You can't compress as much into the vinyl grooves as you can a digital CD. That said if you like the way it sounds, you like the way it sounds.

He's gonna be at the Hump 27 Jan..

I think the vinyl movement is neat, and will always be a valuable hobby to pick up. Nostalgic items are cool, whether it be cars, tools, original Nintendos, old equipment etc.. list goes on. I'll probably never own a good player but it's very neat and interesting to say the least..

I agree. I've kinda joined the movement back to physical books and I just like having a physical collection of things that I enjoy and can put my hands on.

The reason I'm asking about the vinyl is my dad restored my grandfathers and I listened to it all weekend. The sound isn't better but it's different and I dig it.

RG gave you a great link to where you can build a great setup. I can't really add anything to that.

I really like collecting vinyl just because it's a fun way to collect music and the idea of it amazes me. Music coming out of those grooves blows my mind.

Plus I think the age of digital music makes us musically ADD. We hit shuffle and never hear the albums the way the artists intended us to. With vinyl you're forced to sit and listen to an entire album in the order they laid it out. I get a lot more out of the experience of listening that way.

Plus it's a really cool thing to pass on to my kids one day.

As to your comments on buying paper books - that is all I will ever get. I plan on having a huge library in my home one day. I have boxes and boxes of books right now just waiting on a shelf to hold them. I feel like it's more fun that way and it will expose my kids to the fun of books that I had growing up. I want them to be able to walk into a room and be surrounded by books. It's an awesome feeling. Libraries are magical to me.

You are absolutely correct on album formatting. Bands spent a lot of times getting those songs in the correct order for their audiences listening pleasure. Really great albums are ones that you don't have to get up and change after a song or two. I think it is interesting now that the reasons people are listening to vinyl is because they like the sound better than digital. When I was in college 91-95 we bought vinyl because it was cheap as hell and we were broke. When we finally graduated between myself and my roommates we accumulated over 100 records. We had draft party to see who got what. (Time fades away was #1. White Mansions, Good Old Boys, Sneaking Sally, ZZ Tops First, and Fillmore East were up there too). There was a record shop/bong store next door, Local Color, next door. Right by the Beacon. Don't know if it's still there. Good stuff. I still have them in boxes upstairs in my closet.

Local Color was still there in 2008, not sure now.

There's a new record store on that side of town now called "The End of All Music". Their selection is growing and the dude there seemed chill as hell. I liked him.

It's totally different to me. Vinyl is like a black and white movie. High quality audio files are like 4K HD.

I am not sure I can justify to myself spending 325 bucks on the player. That's a little more than I had expected

I don't know which I really prefer but I do know that digital with headphones is pretty legit. I still have my old walmart lp player. had some people over for a party couple of years and broke out the vinyl. They were younger. Late 20s and loved it. The one thing I remember when they were leaving was one of them said to me "you have one of the best record collections I have ever seen and absolutely the worst record player."

I think when most people say better they mean different. In most cases technology makes the acoustics better. That being said the sound is just different. There is no better sound then listening to Sam Cooke on vinyls. Or if you are listening to Muddy Waters with Little Walter it just has a different feel. Hard to explain.
