Jimmy Filler is angry. The co-founder of the UAB Football Foundation said UAB President Ray Watts didn't tell the truth Saturday on ESPN's College GameDay.

Watts has said his decision to kill the school's football program was strictly a financial decision.

"Nobody has come forward with a firm commitment of any additional resources, and we've asked," Watts said on GameDay. "If the checks were in the bank, it would be one thing. We cannot lead this university on promises."

Filler called those words "a bunch of crap."

"For him to say nobody came forward is not telling the truth," Filler said. "When I say I'm going to raise $5 million, you can take that to the bank. He could've taken that to the bank. He could've called me. He didn't.

"It's not about money. (Watts) had plenty of money to sustain the program."

Filler said Saturday that he and his co-chairman of fund-raising, Harold Ripps, already had $5 million pledged to pour into the program, "and we had only just begun."

Filler is the second major UAB booster to dispute Watts' statement on GameDay. UAB donor Don Hire said this on the show: "I was never given the opportunity to say I would contribute or not contribute (to UAB football). I sure would have."

Filler announced Oct. 28 the formation of the UAB Football Foundation "to provide the necessary resources ... to ensure a vibrant UAB football program."

Filler went public again Nov. 25 with his pledge to raise $4-5 million for UAB football in the next year and millions more in the next decade.

Filler said Saturday that neither Watts nor anyone from his office contacted him after either announcement, and it's not as if Filler is a stranger to Watts. Filler said that shortly before Watts became the UAB president, the two men met to discuss a fund-raising project. Watts wanted Filler to help raise money for a $40 million heart rehabilitation center that would include coaches' offices, Filler said.

"They know who I am," Filler said. "They just wanted to kill the football program."

Why are the Bama fans so against UAB? It's not like they were taking anything away from either of the top programs in the state.

UAB doesn't matter to them. That's why 7 of 13 posts on page one came from Bama fans.

These UAB boosters are now suppose to give that money to Alabama to buy new waterfalls and help restore Saban's credit after bad investments.

How poor is the State of Alabama? I know y'all receive a crazy amount of Federal Aid, so much that Stalin would blush, but still. It doesn't take much to run a football program. The State of Texas has a bunch.

I'm not against UAB, nor it's football program. I don't really care one way or the other. The decision wasn't made by Bama fans, none of us were asked to vote on it or had a say. Most of the Bama fans have only responded because of all the Rival fans flaming Bama and The University of Alabama, and the UA System, which UAB is governed by.

I hate that they got shut down but if they didn't have the financial means of support then so be it. Why continue to pour tax dollars in the UAB football money pit that doesn't really have enough support by the public / fans.

Seems like more people would be glad that, for once, a fiscally responsible decision was made.
