Bama has been stellar on 1st, 2nd and 4th down(0-8) but, for some reason has given up 3rd and plus yardage (3rd and 7 or more) a bunch of times(run or pass)...

I'm sure that will be a point of emphasis within this bye week...

But how has LSU fared in 3rd and 5 or more so far?

I don't know about 3rd and long, but currently LSU ranks 82nd in the nation converting at 39%.

Alternately, LSU is ranked 7th in the country (1st in the SEC) in 3rd down defense with a 29% conversion rate.

ETA: When you can't pass the ball, every 3rd down is 3rd and long.

I have no stats for support, but from watching the games that count (SEC and Wisconsin), I'd say we're doing okay, especially as the season has progressed. I even believe we've made a couple 3rd-and-5 or longer first downs THROUGH THE AIR. If we do this against your team, I'd advise the EMT's to be nearby Saban when he goes into shock.

Unlike most Gumps, we don't mind having a black QB

coming off of last years nation leading team on third downs the only way to go was down, and down we went. i dont have stats or rankings but i can gaurantee you they are middle of the pack at best. that auburn game absolutely killed us in that regard

What's troublesome is that even teams that are just OK have been able to extend drives... Arky extended several 3rd and longs by running it... maybe it's because we assumed they would pass which would make it a good coaching call by Bret... our best effort was ironically against aTm (only gave up 2 conversions) a team that should have had more success on 3rd down...

This Bama team is hard to read this year.

When I look at a person, I don't see race.

I wasn't aware that LSU fans were so racist.

My guess is the stat you are looking for is very poor.

They converted 2 4th quarter 3rd and 20s to win some important games (UF and Wisconsin).

What does this have to do with 3rd down conversions?

Regardless, it's a pretty ignorant statement.

3rd down = passing play = shitty secondary exposed.

We're averaging something ridiculous like 7+ per play on first down. Second the poster above about second down. the problem is we find ourselves in a lot of 2nd and 2-5 situations and then piss away second down.

I like this matchup. Alabama has a stout rushing defense against traditional smashmouth rushing attacks. I think we will do fine in third down situations.

My concern is how well we win first down. Against a rushing attack, that is everything. If we consistently give them 4-5 yards in situations where we have to defend everything, we are in trouble.

I recall lots of third downs against Auburn. I recall very few first downs immediately following them.
