I have been saying it for years. They need to pay the players about $10K/yr or $8-10/hr for every hour they spend during sports and sport related activities.
Eh... I don't agree. Allowing athletes to profit from their likeness is one thing (and something that needs to happen, in my opinion). This is a whole different thing. Where does it stop? Texas pays $10K. So OU and Alabama pay $15K. Then USC ups the ante to $25K thinking that will trump everybody. Until rabid A&M boosters pool their resources and offer $100K per player. Insanity reigns. An NCAA-sanctioned stipend is one thing, but that isn't what Texas is doing.
On the other hand, I'm kinda sorta glad that UT is at the forefront of destroying college football. Seems fitting.

Yes, a shitty team in a good conference still has recruiting advantages.

Also what about the schools that can't afford to do it, this pretty much ensures super conferences.

After taking StopRobot's advice and reading the article, this isn't as big a deal as I had assumed. It at least sounds like they're only providing additional income that covers the full cost of attendance. I would guess this is mostly food and lodging expenses.
Off on a bit of a tangent, this leads to my gripe against the NCAA for outlawing football dorms + meals that were standard in the days I was in school, all of course free to the players. Those were presumably outlawed because it gave an "unfair" advantage to schools that could afford it. So now here we are, with big schools paying what they were paying before, now apparently with the NCAA's blessing.
