Since the rebellious black bears are playing their neighbor to the North on Saturday this is an opportune time to remember Memphis AD R.C. Johnson declaring in 2011 that Memphis belonged in and deserved to be in the SEC

They are better sports wise then the SEC cellar dwellers. It is the commuter aspect of the school that keeps them from being SEC quality

If they were allowed in the SEC and had significant facility upgrades, they could be a huge threat. They'd go toe to toe with Kentucky in basketball. If they could build a fence around Memphis and East Tennessee recruiting, they could probably become a quality football team as well.

That said, I don't want a third Tennessee team. I'd rather Louisville.

We gave them our fat, program destroying DT with a 0.0gpa. Albert Means even got special permission to play right away (as if Alabama's recruiting transgressions somehow resulted in failing every single subject.)

What more do they want?

They would never let Memphis into the SEC because of the TV deals. They already have that market. They wanted to expand into the Midwest and Texas markets.

Memphis/UCF/Tulane/SMU should join the Big 12.

A lot of outsiders may not realize it but we're called the three states of Tennessee for a reason. Not only are there geographical and cultural differences, they've been pronounced from the beginning. We're the only state where East, Middle, and West are written into our state constitution as Grand Divisions and legally mean something. Our signs used to say "Welcome to the Three States of Tennessee" until a governor decided that needed to change sometime in 70s or 80s (I think).

Adding Memphis would hurt the Mississippi schools and Arkansas in terms of football. But honestly, other than basketball (which has been going downhill), they ain't ready.

Why we still play Tiger High is beyond me. We got nothing out of it, and it's their Super Bowl.

Do you mean West Tennessee recruiting?

Memphis just isn't a fit. They don't even have their own facilities. They play in the Liberty Bowl which sucks and FedEx Forum which is badass but 15 miles from campus.

Rhoades would be a better fit than Memphis.

I think they had at least one good team sometime in the 90s but that's really all I got. And yeah, they hate OM - baaad.

Honestly they are the perfect Big 12 expansion team. It would get WVU off of an island.

FWIW: it's East, West, and Middle, TN. We refuse to use the -ern like Kentucky does.
