Why did Doug Nussmeier leave Alabama?

All of this Kiffin talk has made me wonder why the spot was vacant.
Nussmeier did well with McCarron in the national championship season. Michigan is not a step above Alabama at this point? Did Saban and him just not get along?

He was told to look for a new job.

Thanks for the clarification, guys. It's amazing the stuff that you can't find on google.

It is pretty much a given in retrospect with Kiffin hanging around the team in December.
He is sure lighting the world on fire up there in Ann Arbor....

I'm struggling to think of any point where Michigan was a step above Alabama. 1930-1950, perhaps an argument could be made, but Alabama wasn't just sitting around on their hands back then.
At the turn of the century when Yost was there and a large portion of the country didn't even play football yet?
People like to joke about how Alabama fans talk about their history. With the exception of a couple outlying seasons under Lloyd Carr, all Michigan has to go on is shite that happened sixty years ago.
(ib4 Schembechler; he was just good enough to sit there and watch Bryant and Woody Hayes win national championships.)

The O could have been much more potent but he lacked creativity in play calling.

I didn't pay much attention to Alabama (outside of our game) until the Sugar Bowl. The entire time I thought the offensive playcalling was the reason Bama lost that game. It seemed to have no rhyme or reason.

Nuss just wasn't an elite playcaller. He tried to be too cute. Your defense can't stop Coop or Norwood? No problem. We will stop them for you by making sure everyone gets a reception. Can't stop Henry? Don't worry. We will call three pass plays in a row, so you won't have to worry about it. Or we will take him out and put an injured Yeldon in after Henry or Drake just gashed your defense.
It seemed like Nuss had a spinner up in the booth and whatever it landed on was the next play he called.

I always felt like the talent at 'Bama succeeded despite Nuss, not because of him.

After looking at Michigan this seems to be the case

Him failing to properly utilize the running game last year cost Bama an nc. Quit running Drake in the auburn game and not running Henry enough in the Sugar Bowl?

It probably had to do with the fact that he is a mediocre play caller. He can design an offense with the best of them and made the passing game a legitimate threat, but he always seemed to want to make things more difficult than they needed to be. He also wasn't great at getting the ball to our playmakers on offense.
If something was working, he would stop doing it.

No argument here. I honestly added at this point to keep the thread from getting derailed by some Michigan man.
