Probably won't be a popular thread, but I still think there were some positives from the game.

Mauk completed nearly 60% of his passes for 331 yards despite running for his life, despite WR's not running the right routes or not running at all and despite snaps going over his head.

Sasser continues to be the most reliable WR getting career bests.

Hunt continues to catch TD's.

Hansbrough averaged over 10 yards per carry. Think about that. With how bad we feel the line played, he still averaged over 10 yards a carry.

Brothers, on the other side of the ball, was more active than I ever remember him being.

I can put this to rest.

quote:

Mauk completed nearly 60% of his passes
how near? he didn't have a completion in the third quarter so that is actually a little amazing.

quote:

Sasser continues to be the most reliable WR getting career bests.

More chances and his career has been about naught to date.

quote:

Hansbrough averaged over 10 yards per carry.

1 run for about 70 yards and just not that many carries.

quote:

Brothers, on the other side of the ball,

To bad he isn't playing in the middle and moving up on line or lateral on the overloads, Scherer simply can't get it done. Oh I know, you are tempted to mention Scherer's team leading tackles, which mostly occur after the runner has picked up 5 or 7 yards.

Happy to help.

A team is never as bad as their worst game nor as good as their best game.

This is what happens when an entire team knows they can beat an obviously inferior team with a good offense. Textbook example of looking two weeks ahead.

The better, more talented team lost because they flat out didn't care about their opponent. We are miles ahead of them but they played so much better because we wanted South Carolina... Well this is what fricking happens when you think you are too good to care about your current opponent.

The funny thing is, I'm still very confident we will compete in the East this year.

Yesterday IU played nearly perfectly for them. They were able to execute every play on both sides of the ball and control the LOS. On the other hand, we committed I think 11 penalties compared to around 12 total in the previous 3 games. Mauk was constantly running for his life, our receivers dropped some easy frick passes, and they owned us when running to our left (Charles Harris is a RS Frosh... He wasn't ready for a full start yet).

And after all this, it still took them till the last 22 seconds to beat us. We have the more talented and better coached team, Its just that these are 19-22 y/o kids, and they don't have the discipline to not look past an opponent. It happens.

I still have confidence and hope we've learned our lesson about looking past a team. I think we are still the favorite to win the East, it's our race to lose. We just need to focus week to week better.

60.42% actually.

So the long run didn't happen? Even without it, he averaged 5.67 yards per carry. Not bad considering how bad the line was. Murphy, on the other hand, averaged 1 yard per carry and nearly every series he was the featured back for stalled out.

Didn't say anything about Scherer because I didn't see anything spectacular about his play. But I would suggest you go look at the play by play of the game. At least the one on Mizzou's site shows a vast majority of his tackles were runs for anywhere from no gain to something 3 yards or under. Regardless, didn't think there was anything spectacular about how he played and those stats don't show the plays where he didn't make plays.

I'm an optimist too, Reedus.

Our best defensive player, Markus Golden, didn't play and it's impact (in my mind) can't be overstated. Our pass rush was practically nonexistent. That the turnover streak ended is probably not a coincidence.

On offense, we have the best quarterback in the division and he's only a sophomore. Others can disagree on that, but until and unless we continue to get crushed along the offensive line, I'm confident Mauk has the tools and moxy to be the best.

We also may have the best all-purpose weapon in the division, Marcus Murphy. Unfortunately, he's being pressed into other duty so we have yet to see if Henson has a special plan for him.

Another positive is every other defense in this division has looked like horseshite.

I shot called the A&M victory over South Carolina months ago because of their losses and the ascension of Dylan Thompson to QB, who I believe is turnover prone. And nothing in their two victories has done anything to dissuade me from seeing them as still highly vulnerable. (Even Vandy scored 34 on them.)

Do we have problems? Yes.

Are we incredibly young and inexperienced behind our front line starters? Yes.

If we adequately protect Mauk can we score 30+ on South Carolina? Hell yes.

Can we hold South Carolina to less than 30? That I'm not so sure of.

At any rate, I'm not jumping off a bridge or throwing in the towel. Every honest observer knew 2014 was going to be a transitional year, we just didn't think a potential non-con loss would come against Indiana. In my mind nothing's changed. It's a year to grow on and so long as we don't go 6-6 or worse, there's still something to recruit to.

I'd also like to take this opportunity to raise a glass to TigerMatt who gave his life last night to save us from being swallowed up in doom, despair and self-loathing.

You will be missed for now, you sweet maniacal sonofabitch!

I haven't looked at the stats from that mess, but other than the one pass Murph dropped that would have been a 1st down, I can't put anything on him, he played his azz off, if the line blocked badly when he ran and the play calling wasn't up to snuff that's really not him.

Mauk getting to 60% is kind of amazing after his 3rd quarter, and again not all his fault it went so poorly, dealing with the snaps, blocking and drops.

I really wish we had the LB's that the staff/fans seem to think we have, because the scheme we run really needs them.

I wasn't putting all of the blame on Murphy. It was just a rough day for him for whatever reason. He had 11 carries for 11 yards. Hansbrough, for whatever reason, averaged over 10 yards a carry (over 5 1/2 if you take away the one long run).
