Is it strictly for conversation talk on the main networks? Does it help with recruiting? Build confidence?

This is not a thread about UM being ranked 10th, because honestly they deserve it. They were ranked 18th to begin the season and have done what is necessary to be at 10. But to be honest, nobody has done anything that warrants them to be ranked anywhere because most teams are still sorting out their teams and playing cupcakes (as they should). Seems like every year you have a highly ranked team that is not even ranked at the seasons end (not saying that about UM because I believe they are a top 20 team for sure). Why not just have the rankings on hold and release a somewhat accurate poll week 7 or 8? Seems like it only makes sense after the debacle of preseason polls that are released every year.

To prevent misleading standings before a team has been tested

Agreed. Preseason rankings factor in way too much with how the final rankings go. It should all be about what happens on the field this year. But that will never happen.

This topic comes up every year. It mainly just gives the media and fans something to talk about. It all works itself out eventually so don't put much stock into it. I don't know why it gets people so butthurt every season.

Because the revenue of the off season and early season still needs to be fed.

Like it or not money corrupts all things all the time.

It's nice the polls finally don't have a direct say in the title conversation, but it's easy to see the committee feeling like they shouldn't rock the boat and come to different conclusions than the polls.

But the committee releases what, top15 starting in around when the BCS began to release? That is an opportunity for them to say they don't agree with the polls, and then we will see if the polls correct to the committee or vice versa.

Polls beginning in preseason is entirely tradition and talking points now. I don't mind the fact that there are growing pains as the eye test is gradually overcome with actual data.

Because it's fun and entertaining. Not sure why this is so hard to understand.

Its foolish but there are preseason predictions for Heismans, bowl pairings and of course NCs....its just insane and the media love having something to talk about while they sell soap.

Two main reasons:

1.) The First Amendment acknowledging our freedom of speech and of the press.

2.) Supply and demand dynamics in the marketplace.

Why not just have the rankings on hold

So you want to restrict one or both of the above?

How about this:

If you do not like a product or service, don't consume it. If enough people agree and stop consuming the product or service, it will disappear from the market.

It's not rocket science, it's freedom. Stop trying to control what other people do, and just try to control what YOU do.

If the AP didn't, ESPN would still and so would every internet board. It's a time waster. Space filler. At the end of the year are the rankings that count.
