Updates from Tuesday, Aug. 26

Jeremy Fowler of CBSSports.com reported the latest on Alabama's battle at the quarterback position:

Alabama's early-week plan is to play two quarterbacks on Saturday against West Virginia , with fifth-year senior Blake Sims the current favorite to start, CBSSports.com has learned.

Touted Florida State transfer Jacob Coker will play in the Georgia Dome, but he failed to create significant separation in Bama's quarterback race, and is expected to come off the bench.

I think he has to. If they really want this "competition" to play itself out for the best then you have to give Blake the start.

Not surprising considering he has stuck it out there for so long and resisted the temptation to transfer

Didn't he play a lot against like Kent State or something years ago?

Georgia State last year: 14/18 130 yards 1 TD 0 INT

That's really the only game they've let him try to run the offense.

Georgia State went winless last year. Just sayin.

Sims deserves the start, so hope it happens. Coker will get his chance.

No doubt, but it's really the only "serious" playing time he got last year, so it's all we can go on.

My biggest beef with Saban over the years (and, let's face it, it's really hard to have any), has been his grooming and preparation of the backup/future QBs. If/when Coker is named the starter, I hope in blowouts he doesn't bring in Sims for mop up duty. I want to see Bateman (or Cornwell) get the garbage time snaps. And let them run the entire offense, not just hand it off three times on HB Dive Right and then punt. Get them some legit experience.

I understand why you are saying that but there's no way that Sims would not come in and play in that scenario. That would be a shitty way to treat him after all he has done to earn the right to play.

Not saying he should get all the snaps but he should play and then let the others get some of the last snaps.

True, but the future of the team is important too, and guys like Bateman need the reps.

Morris is ahead of both those guys on the depth chart

Yep. Morris recently beat out Bateman again. Cornwell is gonna redshirt, so I wouldn't mind seeing Morris/Bateman split garbage time reps. Or maybe Morris plays garbage time in one game, Bateman in another, etc.

Unless Sims is the starter. Then Coker gets the reps for next year.

If Coker is the starter, then Sims will still get his reps with the 1s.

depending where we are on the field could they put Coker under center with sims lined up in the I behind a RB. Both the QB an RB split out wide and now Sims takes the ball in the shot gun. Makes both sets of mommas happy

During the GA State game last year, Coach Saban told Nuss that Sims would run the offense just as AJ would. No read options etc. he was 14/18 130 yds and a TD which is solid in live game action. Regardless of the opponent Sims showed he could play given the chance. How will that translate against a Power 5 defense? We don't know but guys there are 3 days until game time and I'm just ready for some football. Blake/Coke doesn't matter RTR

One thing I don't want to see happen is Coker to become a headcase. He lost out to Winston last year. Transferred to UA, where he thought he would win the job, and is now having a tough time winning the job from a guy that nobody expected anything from. In the meantime, he's got to learn the offense, gain the trust of his teammates/coaches, and be able to perform at a championship level.

That is a lot to deal with no matter who it is.

Three years ago who would've predicted that Blake would be the Sims to start at QB for us?

This could certainly be argued, but considering that every snap of every game played the last few years has had National Title implications, it is understandable why we haven't had a lot of extra snaps for the backup.... That being said, whomever starts at any position has my 100% support

I mean it is what it is. The back-ups aren't going in until we're up big (like you said, stakes are too high for us to randomly put the back-up in early in a game for the sake of experience). And, like most teams, we're going to play conservative when we're up big (only pass on 3rd and long).
