Alabama wide receiver commit Calvin Ridley won't be eligible to play for part of his 2014 season at Coconut Creek (Fla.) Monarch High, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports. Ridley, who will be 19 years and 9 months old after Monarch's September 19 game against Sunrise (Fla.) Piper, meaning the five-star prospect will be eligible for four games in 2014.

Somewhat related, but some leagues in VA have started talking about cutting off eligibility at 19 because re-classifying has become such a problem.

I've seen video on Ridley, and he looks legit. He looks like a man amongst boys out on the field....

According to the FSU 247 mod Ridley has not failed a grade or been held back. Apparently he just started school really late.

This is awesome IMO. Less opportunity to get hurt and will be more physically advanced by the time he gets to campus.

LSU junior LB Kwon Alexander is only 4 months older than him. Wow.

Did he start pre-school when he was 8?

Apparently reading up about him: his family was originally from Cuba, and came to the US in the 80s. They were boat people. But something happened, and their boat got lost at sea. Luckily, they were found 3 years later, and brought to Miami safe and sound. They relocated from there. Good to hear about their happy ending....

Jalston Fowler was either too old to play AHSAA his senior year in high school or he ran out of eligibility. I believe his age was a factor. Basically had to sit out the year.

Virginia changed the re-classing rules two years ago. It has been a problem. As a basketball coach (Showcase teams) I'm against re-classing unless the player is young for his grade and can benefit from the extra year of maturity and work on his academics. I am firmly against re-classing for athletic reasons. It leads to chasing a scholarship that probably isn't there in the first place for far too many players. Sadly, this is mostly driven by parents and their unrealistic assessment of their kids athletic ability.

Agree on all counts. I know it's an especially big problem in the DC area with Georgetown Prep, Gonzaga, etc. Their teams are full of "redshirt" seniors.
