Excerpted:

quote:

Charlton, a senior, received a scholarship offer from the Gamecocks on Monday evening and committed a short while later.

“USC is always where I’ve wanted to go. It’s just exciting to be able to play Gamecock football with some really great players,” Charlton said.

.......

"Joe Robinson sent me a message on Twitter tonight and told me to call him at 8," Charlton said. "After football practice I called him and we talked for a little bit and he said he would like to offer me a full ride. I talked it over with my parents and I called him back and accepted the offer. It's just awesome. It’s a dream come true. I’ve always loved the Gamecocks."

The 6-foot-5, 180-pound Charlton was 7-for-10 on field goals last year with a long of 52 yards. He was happy to have his college choice out of the way before the 2014 kickoff.

“It only makes me want to do better,” he said.

Kohl's Kicking ranks Charlton the No. 5 punter in the 2015 class. He was the top uncommitted punting prospect before his pledge to USC.

Said Kohl's Kicking:Joe has freakish leg strength, one of the most talented hs k/p we have ever seen, FG in college will probably not happen for Joe but has hit 5.3 hang-times on punts and 4.6 hangs on KO's in front of Kohl's staff, upside is huge.

Charlton also averaged between 45 and 50 yards per punt in 2013, and most of his kickoffs reached the end zone. Charlton said he averaged 77 yards per kickoff at the Kohl's Kicking camp.

Falcons coach Reggie Shaw, “He has the strongest leg that I have ever coached and is a gifted kicker.”

He is USC’s 28th (or 29th) commitment for the 2015 class.

Spurrier rarely awards schollies to HS kickers. This kid must be pretty good - and a big time punter can be a weapon.

How often does your program offer kickers? They seem to be becoming more and more important - important enough to start burning schollies on them.

But none of us had ever heard of this kid until just now, amirite?

ETA: As per Conway, he is now the #1 punter in the nation:

Overall #1 Punter in Nation for 2015, per BOTH Rivals and 247sports...

Geee, thanks. You replied so eloquently, 'preciate it.

It's what I love about the recruiting forum ... it leaves all the bullshite adolescent trolling over on the SECr.

I really like this move. You could argue punting cost us the tenn game last year. Hopefully, this kid comes in and immediately takes over punting duties.

The question it evoked for me personally was, if this kid is the #5 k/p in the nation according to Kohl's, and he was right in our backyard yet I had never heard of him ... I'm wondering who #s 1-4 are and to whom are they already committed?

I seem to remember someone posting that they had recently landed the #1 kicker or punter or something, recently.

ETA: ConwayGamecock provided the answer:

https://kohlskicking.com/recruiting/national-rating-system/punters/2015

Punters by rank, where they are going:

1 - Oklahoma
2 - Miami
3 - Tennessee
4 - Missouri
5 - South Carolina
6 - Stanford
7 - Colorado
8 - SELA
9 - Syracuse
10 - Uncommitted out of Florida
11 - Uncommitted out of NC
12 - Louisianan Monroe

21 - A&M

82 - Notre Dame

There is absolutely no doubt about it.

It almost cost us a couple of other games too, Vandy and Florida. He averaged what, 26 yards a punt against Vandy? 29 yards? He let them back in the game. Same against UF ... like 33 yds a punt including a shank.

Hull was horrible last year. Averaged 38 yards a punt but worse yet was that, under pressure and in key situations, he was a shankapotamus.

I'll cringe and cover my eyes every time he punts this season. Although, I've been hearing there are a couple of walk-ons who might usurp him this season.

Special Teams is so important these days. They are the difference between a good season and a great season.

That Tennessee game ... Fry missed a FG too. :::: sighhhhhh ::::

No doubt. There were times when team benefited from punting and stopping our offense and making us punt.. that way there offense would gain 20+ yards that they couldn't get on our defense.

If this guy can avg over 37 yards, he could start for us right now. I'm all for a scholarship punter after watching the bullshite produced this past 2 seasons by our current guy.

Of course kickers are worth a scholarship, they win and lose games. We have 2 on schollie and a punter too. We signed a top 2 Kicker in '14 and have a commit from a top 3 punter in '15.

Saban doesn't give kickers scholarships and it's bitten him in arse a few times.

UGA has been offering PK and P every 3-4 years for a while. Of course, they sometimes end up being passed by walk-ons, but hey they usually have a pretty good kicking game.

Barber was decent his freshmen year. UGA had to break in a new long snapper last year and that might have increased the anxiety, but he started taking WAY too long to get punts off and that led to blocks. He lost the job to Erickson, a walk-on late last year, and both are competing for the starting position this year.

What happened to Morgan? He was solid. Didn't he have a 50 yarder against Tenn?

Bobby Bowden always claimed he would have won three more MNCs if he had learned earlier to award kickers schollies.

Thunderfoot changed his mind I guess.

#4 Kicker on Kohl last year and #2 on the composite.

#2 Punter on Sailer this year and #1 on the composite.

I've seen some of our fans complain about using multiple scholarships on kickers but so many games are won and lost by kicking. It makes no sense why you would pass on a guy that is kicking 50+ in high school already without a tee to instead train a walk-on that needs work to get to that level. Especially not being in a collegiate training program yet either. It makes no sense.

247Sports just listed SC's new kicker, Joseph Charlton, as the #1 Kicker in the 2015 class. He got that Cock Bump in the rankings.

It's a great idea. With the parity in the conference now, a punter can definitely win or lose you a game.
