It is completely based on whoever installs your unit and the area you live in. I have had both and Dish Network blows DirectTV out of the water in my area. There is no comparison.

People that say one is better than the other...first they need to tell you if they have had both, so they can give an objective answer.

I have had only Dish and have been very happy. I DO lose signal during very haevy rains, but that does not happen often. I ypically DVR most, if not all programs and watch later. If I DO happen to lose the signal I can always watch a DVR program.

No experience with DirecTV, so I have no opinion.

I mean, I understand if joe blow come out and does some crappy terminations on your cables, but I always thought the amount of HD programming was superior on Direct TV than Dish?

Is that not the main hoopla for one over the other? Does dish carry Sunday ticket (don't have that and don't care cause I'm a college football can) like direct tv does? Thought that's why all the bars have direct also.

I was one of the first 1,000,000 users with Direct Tv.(#700,000). I was with them up until 3 years ago when I went with Dish. I am happy with Dish and think if you try it you will be happy also.

Dish is fine as long as you want to endure a 6 week public fight to keep basic cable channels every year.

"Dish customers: ESPN wants to rob you blind. Join with us and fight! Call Bristol and let them know you won't be taken advantage of! If ESPN doesn't bend, you'll lose your sports!"

It's like signing up for a political campaign. I don't want homework, that's your job, satellite company.

I have had Directv for approx 12 years and switched to Dish one time, as they would upgrade to 4 receivers at no charge. They guaranteed me that I would be able to receive all the programming that I currently had with Directv, and I asked about the NFL Sunday Ticket. They assured me that by that Fall I would be able to get the Sunday Ticket, as there was a merger with Directv on the table.

There claim was not true and two months later, I returned their equipment and they let me out of their contract (I respect Dish for doing this)

Concerning the signal quality, I think that is totally on how well the Satellite dish is aimed and both would be equal.

For me the NFL Sunday ticket is the deal breaker, and I feel confident that Directv will have the SEC network in the future. Maybe not this year, but with the merger of AT&T and Directv very soon.

I may have to head to a sports bar for viewing the Hogs, or if they are not better than last year, I won't have to watch them.

Have not noticed this particular fight...with ESPN, I mean. The one I see is with Peachtree/SportsSouth and losing the Braves games on the weekend. THAT is maddening, but I honestly rarely watch a baseball game all the way through, so.......

U verse is the shite until you run out of promos. Switched to Dish and will continue until I can lock in the good price for Uverse again.

Please tell me you calle them and told them you were a continuing customer. As long as you do that your bill will stay about the same.

As far as the AT&T merger goes, the approval meeting does not happen until next May. Most are saying that it will get approved.

THIS. DirecTV will be my go to as long as they are the only one to carry the Sunday ticket.

DirecTV will work out a deal with the SEC Network. Almost every bar/restaurant in America has DirecTV because of the Sunday Ticket, too much money at risk being lost if DTV does not pick up SEC Network and bar/restaurant owners and franchises switch to Dish or another cable provider.

I don't remember it with ESPN either, it's just the first channel I could think of. But I do remember getting mailings several times when I was a customer, and perhaps worse, after I stopped using Dish I still heard Dish ads on the radio talking about how some channel might be lost if you didn't act.

I just always thought it was kind of unprofessional for a full service provider.

Anyway, I don't know that they've ever actually lost a channel in those campaigns, so I wouldn't be too worried about it if I had to get Dish again.

What a clusterfrick that was. I was just outside the range to pick it up with a good antenna and couldn't watch 1/4th of the Braves games. Absolutely maddening. I made excuses to go to family members or friend's houses whenever I could.

Luckily we sucked as I recall.

There was a significant one with Viacom. And I think Viacom pulled the plug on the channels and the heat turned on Dish instead.

And there was one regarding AMC right around when the Walking Dead was in season and I remember that being a huge clusterfrick as well.

Had both. Had DirecTV first and the customer service was horrible. I wouldn't recommend them to my worst enemy. However, I do not care about the NFL Sunday ticket so it was not much of a choice to leave.

For example: My bill went up after the first year, but then went up again each successive month after that. I saw that they kept adding more boxes to my system even though I never had any actual changes. When I called to find out why it took me 3 phone calls to even get the right person and when I shot holes in their explanation it was like pulling teeth to get them to lower my bill back to what it should be.

With Dish the channels and quality is about the same but I pay less and their customer service is much better.

For example: There was a time I started getting frustrated because my service was going out at random times on random channels for no reason. This went on for about two weeks. Then I got a phone call from their customer service (they called me). Through my internet connection they saw that I was losing service much more than I should be and wanted to send someone out to look at the system. I happily agreed and he came out and replaced my dish with a new one as something had happened to the old one. No problems with any service since.

Before this incident I had no strong feelings either way but now I really like Dish and recommend it highly. It might be a superficial reason, but you asked for specifics.

Ahhh! I see and understand.

We might get them as well, but I rarely read them and just chunk them!

I do remember hearing those and hated it. I have not heard them in awhile...maybe the learned their lesson. I hope so!

I agree 100%!

They still do not carry all the Braves games. I THINK they carry all or most of the weekday games and miss most, but not all of the weekend games. It really doesn't bother me that much, but drives my father crazy.

THIS one would have made me mad. I hve a neice that is on the show. She is a "featured walker", meaning she gets killed a lot and has closeups. I think she has "walked" away from the Walking Dead for the upcoming season, though. I saw her get killed 3-4 times an episode there for awhile, though!

I have no experience with DirectTV, but have had no issues with Dish. All the games I want to see, in HD. More channels that I ever want to watch.

IF there is heavy rain to the south of me, I may lose signal for a few minutes, but it's never a prolonged deal, and it has to be pretty heavy.
I would assume that would be similar with Direct.

Dish was smart enough to jump on board with the SEC network pretty quickly, so there's that...

ETA: To clarify 'all the games I want to see'... I'm not that huge of a NFL fan, rather watch a good college game any day - so the NFL Ticket is not an issue with me.

Weird, I see many posts about losing signal but I have yet to experience it other than the really severe storms.

It's probably more of who installed than either provider.

Actually, it is a VERY rare occurrence for me....it has to be a BIG storm.

I've had both. I dropped Dish a few years ago when they lost Fox Sports South the weekend UGA played Colorado. That being said, I was completely happy with the service/equipment of Dish. If I hadn't upgraded equipment and extended my contract with DirecTV recently, I would have no hesitation in switching back to Dish.
