how do they generally do?
is it worth getting all the recruiting stars in the world if most of them are bad apples?

Kiffin signed them at UT and USC and failed miserably. Hell, most of his recruiting class at UT was gone as soon (or sooner) than he was. I've never seen anything like it, TBH.
Meyer signs them everywhere he goes and so far has done well with them but IMO he tends to stay a step ahead of when the culture/tipping point of bad apples is about to explode.
Generally, though I think they're almost always bad idea. You can afford to take a risk on a few but filling the team up with bad apples eventually backfires on the vast majority of coaches and teams. JMO.

They win national championships.

Depends on how bad they are. If they're truly bad apples they never stick around long enough to do that. If their moderate to mildly 'bad' they can be of help. Too many though can bad for the team.

Georgia wins a lot of games, but they have a lot of arrests and bad pub too.
There's pros and cons.

The bad apples that like to rob, steal, and brandish guns are no good for a program. The bad apples that you worry about losing their temper and beating someone to a pulp have their place in football. This ain't the ice capades. You need a few thugs if you want to win it all.

Seriously? I mean...most of the kids don't get into trouble while they are in High School. or their coaches hide their problems so they can get a kid signed to a major college. The kids are on their relatively best behavior when they are visiting a school, so you don't know they are trouble until they actually, you know...get into trouble.

While true, Georgia really does not have any more violent kids than the next school. MOST of Georgia trouble is pot, driving without a license etc.
I said MOST.

Thanks for posting. not gonna lie. It brought a tear to my eye. I hate it when kids get sick. I'm glad this one had a happy ending! Cam was great with the kid.

Good apples seem to help their coach go 0-8.

The differences in arrests from one school's team compared to another is largely based on the strictness of the local police force. Athens and Gainesville police or very strict and the arrest records of their teams show that fact.

So yes in the short term, no in the long term.

Miami was good for over a decade and won multiple championships. Florida State has been successful since Bowden was hired. Florida had a few bad years but they've been consistently good the last few decades.

Most kids in high school are minors, and a lot of the trouble that they get into can be handled through community service and restitution...and the charge is expunged from the record. Plus the parent(s) are involved, for the most part.

let's not get carried away, as Prof said, the resulting difference can vary as much as Meyer to Kiffin, they certainly can't and don't make up for coaching.
Pinkel consistently gets rid of his bad apples and still won an SEC division. Richt has still done well getting rid of his, kicking out his star RB and still has one of the best RB crews in football.
