He was smart to have a gun.

If the shooting hadn't been publicized before the fact was known that the defender had a gun, it wouldn't have made national headlines. I bet it really pained ABC and the other networks to report an armed citizen defended his life with a firearm.

Sounds like the hospital wants to get more people killed.

Sounds like the good doctor would rather keep himself and his patients alive.

"It was unclear why the doctor brought a gun to work".

Really?

We had a social worker murdered on a home visit here a few years back. I'd have no problem with those folks being trained to carry.

100percent agree. I hear a lot of gun arguments about how you never see the self defense work out so this was just a good example of what can happen and a person being armed was able to save his own life. Obviously with the mental heath issues we have in this country people owning guns is a scary thought so it's always good to protect yourself and know how to use a firearm.

Next headline will be: Doctor pleads guilty to unlawful possession of a firearm, sentenced to 30 days in jail plus probation.

We know that is coming....Or at least I full expect it to however the statements from the Hospital sounds like they are very thankful he was able to defend himself and possibly others. They will probably lawyer him up and defend him even though he was not supposed to have one on the hospital grounds.

He obviously had it for a reason. Makes you think there is more to this story.

They said in the video that he was allowed to have his gun and wouldn't face any charges.

Hospital might fire him though. They'd be within right, given that it's against policy. But it would possibly cause a public shitstorm for the hospital since he stopped more people from getting hurt or killed.

Will the hospital retract the 'gun free zone' it has? Undoubtedly it will not. Which means this doctor, should he choose to carry again at the hospital, can get himself fired for it.

What a crazy arse country.

I don't think they will fire him. If that hit the big news stations that hospital would have a shite storm on its hands. However, he definatly broke policy so I could see him seeing some type of punishment internally.

The hospital could change it's policy to require permission to carry. It's unlikely, but it could happen.

More than any other group of people, doctors and caseworkers who deal with psychiatric patients on a day to day basis should be carrying. And they should be doing it everywhere. I'd put teachers as the second most in need of firearms.

My wife is a 5th grade teacher. I would say I agree but the country isn't their yet. They fear a loose cannon teacher over a lone gunman. One loose cannon teacher and the entire country would want to ban guns. I definatly understand the need because teachers especially in high school are under a constant threat.

Not just highschool; my wife taught at an 'inner city' middle school (7th grade) for one year and that was enough. She had kids threaten to follow her to her car, and all sorts of other things. She doesn't want to carry a gun, but she does want the principal or willing teachers to carry.

I never felt the need to carry before I did a tour in the sandbox; now I feel much less comfortable without one.

Yeah when my wife was student teaching she had to teach over in Pensacola for some of her college and she had a kid who was what they classified as a stabber. He had tried to stab teachers with objects and things of that nature and it was middle school. With 5th graders it's really only the parents that become enraged but the mass killing objective at schools make them a target which is unfortunate. TSA level security in high schools might become the norm one day.
