Is Columbia SC a nice city?

Might be going to see a USC Game. For one thread, can we keep the banter to a minimum. I want an honest response to this one. I don't care if you hate the Gamecocks, do you like the city?

It's like any city ... except with a lot of history.
The USC side of the city, and all along Main Street, etc., is nice. Like all cities though, there are a couple of areas to avoid.
We've got the same problems most large cities in the South have.

Is it generally clean? Someone told me it's pretty educated and well kept for a city and one of the nicest capitols in the country.

It's a very clean city. A lot of history ... Sherman bombed our Capital Building but it survived thankfully .... but he burned down the rest of the city except for a few of the churches and The Horseshoe on campus.
You'll enjoy your visit. The Vista, the Cockabooses, the tailgating. It's a very very solid SEC game day experience.

Nothing to write home about. Plenty of ghettos, but plenty of nice places with a lot of history.

Thank you. Looking forward to it. Was told the Cockabooses are hard to get into though. :(

We allow guests to pass through ours from time to time.
The problem we've all had, and this has been discussed ad nauseam at our Cockaboose Association meetings ... is that things were getting out of hand. People would beg their way in, then ask to use our restroom, or ask to hit our wet bar, or start chowing down on our food. Most visitors were polite but all too often some would return with friends and want another tour. Or we'd come back from inside the stadium and there would be strangers on our upper deck making themselves at home.
So most of us had to put an end to that, especially those of us right behind the stadium. Now we hire security to keep the riff raff out ... we just had to.
Ours is often used by the networks for video tours and to cut commercials ... we cut one, featuring me, for the SEC Network launch. They made me change hats to a generic Gamecock hat, and they asked me to remove all the liquor from sight, but they cut a lot of footage in ours and another one just down from ours ... generally considered the two best decorated on the railroad.

It's ok. We preferred the charleston part of our trip more.

Yeah, notice I did not recommend 5 Points to him?
For visitors, it's the students strip of bars and taverns ... it now has a heavy police presence and for good reason. A bad element was starting to invade that little area, it's still nice in the day time though and Delaney's is one of my favorite pubs, Abby is probably my favorite bartender in the city.

I spent an extended weekend there a few months back and I thought it was clean and safe. Don't remember seeing many places where you'd want to lock the doors driving through like here in Atlanta. Seemed to have a lot of cool restaurants and there's civil war history everywhere you look.
