Does the R-word offend you?

The word "Retard"
Does it offend you?
Why or why not?
What about practical uses such as "fire-retardant?"

No, it would be retarded to let words bother me.

You're acting like a special needs kid. Quit being so mentally challenged.

Generally speaking no. However, I would hurt someone if they called my autistic son a retard.

Depends.
In reference to a neurotypical person, no.

In general, no.
But you get pretty tired of hearing "I don't want my kid in a class wit dose retards" when trying to get a kid ECE/Special Ed services when they legitimately need it.

As some know, I work in special education. It doesn't bother me but I think it's funny that some people are way more likely to use the R word than say, the N word, because they won't have the same repercussions from the group they're labeling/offending (ex. having to face a big angry black guy who's about to whip their arse the second it comes out of their mouth.) Handicapped people in general aren't the same kind of physical threat so some people are more willing to say the R without worrying too much or even caring in the least.

My wife has this issue too. Especially with the younger private school kids she does evals on. The parents are in denial most of the time.

Going out on a limb here and saying it's because you don't talk about other people's children? I should expect the same type of disgruntlement from stepping to a man and telling him his son's a douchy frat boy.
You don't talk about people's kids.

I think it's juvenile (describing something as "retarded" is what 12-year-olds do), but it doesn't offend me necessarily.
I could see where someone would find it demeaning to the mentally disabled, but then again I don't use it so they don't have beef with me.

The fact that you work with children is more troublesome than any word.

It does not offend me personally, but I understand that it is offensive. I would never use it in the presence of a person with a mentally disabled child or relative. So I generally avoid using it altogether.

It really only offends me when directed at a truly mentally handicapped person.
Just like I don't mind "f@g" directed at somebody, as long as they're not gay.
I have not used either term since I was a teenager.
