Am I alone?

And I realize I probably am on the Rant, but surely someone shares these sentiments.
I'm reading about the Miami thug that sexually assaulted a teenager, I'm reading about another player at Florida State kicked off the team for theft. We all know stories from all of our schools that are embarrassing.
College football is my favorite sport, but my passion for it dies a little every year.
The highest paid state employee in most states is a football coach. That sounds sort of weird to me. The NCAA President is calling for "scholarships for life" in a time where there is rampant academic abuse among college athletes (see UNC, Oklahoma State issues that 20 years ago would have been full blown scandals). I know kids that are really smart - 4.0 with 30+ ACT scores that aren't getting full scholarships while some of their really lazy, dumb classmates get a full tuition, books, room and board + and never play a down.
Even the pageantry that once separated the college game from the NFL is dying at most places. Every SEC team seems to have some massive multimillion dollar expansion or project going on - all while student debt threatens to be a massive bubble.
When I was in college, the average head football coach in the SEC made an absurd $75,000. A ticket to a game cost $15 at most. I remember the 1990 Alabama-Penn State game where my dad had to pay $35 from scalpers and he felt robbed. Now, you can't go to an Arkansas-Kentucky game for less than $60.
I'm not talking to Alabama fans, that did not go to college, but am I just way off base here? Is the college game losing its luster with the thuggery, the academic fraud, and the NFL-like game day atmosphere?

College football's popularity is slowly becoming its demise.

it seems to be starting to lose it's luster to me. i hate the 'i don't care if we cheat or what this player has done' attitude.

It has already ruined the LSU football fan experience.

The only points I agree with you on are about academics.
High-paid coaches and high priced tickets? -Thats the free market at work. Demand = $$$
Academic abuse needs to be addressed more than what it is. Completely unfair to anyone who legitimately earns a degree from X University if there are "student"-athletes who can get them without picking up a pencil.

Nope, I agree with most everything you said. I really don't like what college athletics has become.

I hear ya.
But that's society in general.
It's easy to let the bastards get you down.
Which is why you have to ignore the negative (people and things) and enjoy the good.
Tailgate w your family & buddies, soak-up the season--regardless of how many wins/losses those kids collect, raise a glass to your alma mater, and pray for the haters who try to ruin it.

The win it all cost attitude in college sports is nothing new. I have read stories dated in the early 1900's that talked about school's paying players and creating fraudulent classes. Not positive about this, but I believe the NCAA was first created in the 1950's to put an end to the wild west mindset that existed in college athletics during that time

Exactly. This isn't a new phenomenon.

The free market stuff doesn't really bother me - but the point I poorly made was that the college game was significantly cheaper than the NFL game and now its very close if not more expensive in some cases to go to an Alabama-Arkansas football game in Tuscaloosa than a Saints-Falcons game in Atlanta.
The academic abuses are ruining academia. Some of your better professors are going to smaller Division III schools where there is no pressure to treat athletes differently.

I agree that its not entirely new, but what is new is that the attitude has crept down into high schools and even youth sports.
I witnessed an 8 year old football coach and some parent volunteers set up an elaborate camera system (sidelines and end zones) so that they could film future teams and breakdown their sets.
8 year olds.

This is spot on. When you consider the rising cost of undergraduate tuition it is absurd that degrees are handed out to athletes to gain a competitive advantage. Meanwhile Joe Schmo has 100k in student loans at 22 years old

I don't think you went out on a particularly thin limb here. Isn't everyone disgusted with the reckless behavior of athletes (see, e.g., Oregon basketball players; Miami football players), the loss of pageantry and tradition (expansion), and the academic mess that's likely present at each of our schools?
